| | | Good afternoon! It's Friday, March 11, and today's top stories include new research on millennials' charitable giving, the sentencing of actor Jussie Smollett, and former Vice President Mike Pence's visit to the Poland-Ukraine border. | A survey published by LifeWay Research has found that Christian millennials are three times more likely than their non-Christian counterparts to give money to both religious and non-religious charities. The study, which surveyed more than 900 young adults, also found that nearly 60% of respondents try to purchase from companies that act in Christ-honoring ways, with more than half stating that tithing to their local church is a biblical commandment that still applies today. | In discussing the results, LifeWay Research CEO Scott McConnell stated, "Christians are much more active in donating their finances and no less active in trying to do good with their spending.” The survey was conducted in partnership with AdelFi, who was interested in understanding what money management differences exist between millennial Christians and non-Christians. | |

| The National Religious Broadcasters Board of Directors unanimously approved a resolution that denounces critical theory during its annual convention on Tuesday. Saying that the theory advances "anti-Christian" ideals, the resolution states, "Critical theory advances the erosion of shared history and values, the yielding of human agency to tyranny, the supremacy of mob rule, and the deterioration of family and community bonds, producing great human suffering and alienation from truth." The trade association, which represents conservative-leaning media organizations, also urged "Christian leaders to reject anti-Christian cultural systems that hold out salvation apart from Christ, oppose the influence of critical theory in education, academia, Christian ministry, and Bible teaching, and faithfully apply historic truths of Scripture to contemporary cultural issues.” | | Former Vice President Mike Pence and wife Karen Pence traveled to the Poland-Ukraine border on Thursday where they met with Ukrainian women and child refugees alongside leaders from Christian charity Samaritan's Purse. Pence tweeted about the meeting, explaining, "2.4 million refugees have already fled Ukraine and nearly 400,000 have already come through the Korczowa (Poland) border crossing." Pence, who told the Ukrainian people there that "Americans are standing with them in prayer," also called on his Twitter followers to pray and contribute to charitable organizations like Samaritan's Purse, writing, "Let’s stand together as one with the people of Ukraine.” | | Actor Jussie Smollett, who in 2019 falsely claimed to be the victim of a hate crime perpetrated Trump supporters, has been sentenced to 150 days in jail and ordered to pay more than $120,000 in restitution as part of his felony conviction. In delivering the sentence, Cook County Judge James Linn told Smollett, "You're not a victim of a racial hate crime, you're not a victim of a homophobic hate crime. You're just a charlatan pretending to be a victim of a hate crime, and that's shameful. ... Your very name has become an adverb for lying, and I cannot imagine what can be worse than that.” | Also of Interest... | |

| John Stonestreet, president of the Colson Center for Christian Worldview, and Glenn Sunshine, professor of history at Central Connecticut State University, write about so-called Christian nationalism and how Christians should view nations and national loyalty. Pointing to Scriptures in the Old and New Testaments, the authors conclude that being "good stewards of the nations they are in" is key, but that "great harm is done whenever Christians attempt to build empires." "The West must deal with this crisis by keeping Ukraine free or face far more dire consequences in the future. I fervently wish I had more confidence in President Biden’s leadership," Land asserts. The two sustained several injuries, including a shattered spine for the daughter. In sharing their testimony with Christian Life Assembly in Pennsylvania, Christopher White explained, "God saved my life. The way the plane crashed, the way the branches from the trees grabbed the airplane, the wings got folded back from the energy and they absorbed the speed of the airplane.” Continue reading. |
