Region struggles to retain University of South Carolina grads

According to a study released Wednesday, the university creates one out of every nine jobs in the Midlands, but nearly 62% of graduates live elsewhere. The study found that the school creates an annual statewide economic impact of $6.2 billion.

As part of a U.S. Department of Agriculture $24.3 million COVID-19 relief package extended to rural areas across the country, two Palmetto State school systems, a college and a medical center will expand telemedicine and distance learning.

Initial unemployment claims rise by 384 in week

S.C. saw 4,089 claims filed in the week ending Feb. 27 as the Mixed Earners Unemployment Compensation program, which provides an extra $100 for those who earned at least $5,000 in self-employment net income, launched in the state.
