Grades of Green's summer is sizzling with sustainable events, innovative SOAR corporate tours, and celebrating our students' successes!
We're thrilled to announce our exciting 3-year partnership with the Environmental Protection Agency through the Environmental Justice Collaborative Problem-Solving Grant!

Over the next three years, we're addressing environmental justice and improving community health in Inglewood. With a focus on school-based action, we'll be teaming up with the Inglewood Unified School District and our fantastic partners to empower generations of community members to lead and sustain environmental change.
To kick things off, we hosted an incredible tree planting and gardening event at Bennett-Kew P-8 Leadership Academy in Inglewood. The Bennett-Kew community, teachers, and students rolled up their sleeves and got their hands dirty, transforming planter boxes into vibrant pollinator, succulent, vegetable, and herb gardens. We also planted a beautiful tree on campus, bringing more shade, improving air quality, and creating a green space for students to connect with the natural world.

Parents, educators, and students came together to learn how to turn their school into a greener, healthier place for everyone! We can't wait to continue sprouting and sprucing up more campuses in Inglewood over the next three years!
This event was made possible with the support of the Environmental Protection Agency. We also want to give a HUGE thank you to our Grades of Green board members, the Bennett-Kew community, and all of our partners for their support through volunteering and donating supplies to make this event a success: Kellogg Garden Products, LAcarGUY, West Basin Municipal Water District, and SiteOne Landscape Supply for donating the plants!

Grades of Green celebrated the culmination of our SOAR Eco-Innovation Academy at our second annual Sustain-a-Thon at Subaru Pacific, our dedicated longtime partner. Students and corporate partners came together at this exciting event that showcased the innovative projects our SOAR students have been developing over several months.

Our corporate partners were blown away by the creativity and innovative sustainability plans that our SOAR students developed! Two students were awarded scholarships with the support of Subaru Pacific and Ateliere. Thank you to our fantastic 2023-2024 SOAR corporate partners – Subaru Pacific, Northrop Grumman, Beyond Meat, Turner Construction, Build California, and Further Products – for their unwavering support for sustainability and their time and efforts in developing the next generation of environmental leaders!

Our SOAR Eco-Innovation Academy kicked off the 2024-2025 year with an exciting SOAR-ientation at the Beyond Meat headquarters! With Chef D and the Beyond Meat team, they cooked up delicious, plant-based meals, discovering firsthand how fun and tasty sustainable eating can be!

Beyond Meat CEO, Ethan Brown, shared insights into the environmental impact of eating meat, inspiring our students to see how plant-based diets contribute to a healthier planet, body, and mind! With their culinary creations, they proved that eating plant-based isn't just healthy—it's also incredibly delicious!

Our first SOAR tour of the new year took place at Emeco House in Venice, a space where local architects, designers, and the community can connect. SOAR students learned about the history of sustainable design, the technology that Emeco uses to build furniture from recycled materials, and how Emeco House uses nature as inspiration for indoor spaces and functions exclusively as a zero-waste facility.
Students also toured Eco By Ry at Alta Sea, diving into the world of sustainable surfing. Ryan Harris, the innovative mind behind Eco By Ry, is revolutionizing the surfboard industry by creating eco-friendly boards using eco-resin, a sustainable alternative to fiberglass and foam, and incorporating recycled materials into his designs. During the tour, students got creative, using plastic scraps from Ryan's workshop to mold coasters, dishes, wax combs, and jewelry.
