The Sunday Round-Up

Greetings! There was a ton of travel news this week so be sure to read my weekly column to catch up, in addition to browsing all the stories below. The biggest story currently impacting travel is the fact that COVID-19 is out of control. Here’s a staggering number that I just read on Twitter: “There were more than 1 million new confirmed cases of coronavirus in the U.S. during the first five days of this month. More than 1 million Americans have been diagnosed with the virus so far in December. Think about that!”

No doubt, the post-Thanksgiving surge is going to further impact travel. First of all, much of California is shutting down. All travelers need to know that hotels in places like Southern California and San Francisco are temporarily no longer allowed to accept or honor reservations that aren’t for essential travel. Read the story here

Another huge travel story this week is about that foolish, selfish couple that tested positive for COVID-19 and still flew to Hawaii with their four-year old from San Francisco. They were arrested upon landing. More here.

Not surprisingly, the numbers at TSA checkpoints in the USA have gone down quite a bit from last week. Between 11/22 and 11/28 there were 6,294,276 people who passed through airport security. The past seven days (12/5-11/29), just 5,692,073.

The health experts are pleading for everyone to cancel their holiday travels, which is surreal just to type those words. Yesterday, I called American Airlines and canceled my Christmas flights, which I’d booked earlier in the year, pre-COVID. It has been an interesting experience since they seem to be doing a little bait and switch. Here’s the story; I will keep you updated in Wednesday’s newsletter.

The good news is there’s light at the end of the tunnel thanks to the vaccines. We just need to sit tight until they’re distributed. (Scroll down to find out how you can find out your place in the vaccine line.)
