Happy Sunday, everyone. This is going to be a short one. Thanksgiving has come and gone for us (in the US), but since it's close enough I'm going to discuss it. I frequently say that Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday, and it's not just because of the food and the family and the gravy. It's mainly because it's the holiday I most feel deep down in my bones. I feel thankful. It reminds me to be grateful, but not as an explicit ordinance handed down by my forebrain to the rest of my body. The gratitude just happens. The "reminder" occurs spontaneously somewhere in my body; I don't set a timer on my phone. "Gratitude journals" and "thankfulness meditations" don't resonate so much with me. Thankfulness hits better when it emerges. All you can do is let it emerge. Be open to it. Be aware of everything that's good and beautiful in your life. Just like you accept the load of a Romanian deadlift with "soft knees," be ready to accept gratitude and thankfulness with a "soft awareness." It's all around us. Be there for it. Happy Thanksgiving weekend, folks. |
