"What's your personal philosophy?"

This is apparently a question many interviewers are asking candidates these days. I've heard it from more than a few people currently job hunting.

It's a tough question, isn't it?

Quick, what's your personal philosophy? Explicate with precise language your entire mode of being, moving through the world, and thinking. Do it. Now. Tell me.

Not so easy. Some would say impossible.

I don't like these kinds of questions. Instead of answering with words, it's better to answer with actions. Let your actions show what you're made of and how you approach things.

Philosophizing is fun to do from time to time, but it's too easy to just let it stay in the world of words. Words aren't worth anything if they don't hew to movement in the real world. We all know "philosophy guys" who never amounted to too much. They sure could talk, though.

Think about how words arose: they were describing objects and actions in the real world. It's a good chance the words actually emerged from movement in the real world. The grunts, random utterances, exclamations, and other strange mouth noises that animals make through the course of their daily behaviors and efforts. Eventually, those noises become more refined, more standardized. Words are born.

So when you talk or even think about your personal philosophy, it must be grounded in movement, in action, and in acting upon the real world.

You can "care about the environment" but what are you doing to help it? You can say you "love your family" but how are you actively loving them? You can "value integrity" but how are you displaying integrity with your actions?

To answer the original question, "What is your personal philosophy?", I'd have to say: watch me.

What's your personal philosophy, folks? Let me know in the comment section of New and Noteworthy.
