For today's Sunday with Sisson, I want you to think about paying attention to the details as you go through life. Life simply isn't worth much of anything without the details. It's a blur, a schmear, a smoothie. It's like taking the well-crafted meal of perfectly cooked ribeye, crispy roasted potatoes, and lemony asparagus dipped in mayonnaise and sticking it all in a blender. What's more interesting? The meal eaten as intended, or the smoothie version of the meal? The meal takes fifteen, twenty minutes to eat as you savor it and linger over its many details. Days later, if the meal was good enough, you'll still be thinking about it. Trying to recreate it in your own kitchen. The meal wasn't just the fifteen minutes it took to eat. It's the entire way it alters your experience and trajectory through life. The smoothie takes two minutes to force down into your gullet. It's all mushed together. The flavors meld. Homogeneous texture. It might be memorable, only because it was so gross and weird. It's memorable for the wrong reasons. It detracts from your quality of life. Details are what life is all about. If your vision is blurry, you don't appreciate the fall leaf walk in New England. If you burn your tongue drinking coffee before dinner, the Michelin star tasting menu is lost on you. If you can't (or won't) perceive the details, you're not living. Luckily, you can decide to pay attention to details. I'd suggest you do so starting today. Do you pay attention? Do you stop to smell the flowers? Let me know in the comment section of New and Noteworthy. |
