Longevity is mobility. Think about it. To be truly healthy as we age, we need to be able to traverse the physical landscape. We need to be able to get up from a chair, run up stairs, go for a two hour walk, dance with our spouse, play with our grandkids, get on an intercontinental flight for 8 hours and then get off and explore a city. In short, we need to be able to move through time and space without pain, without it being a monumental effort. We also need to be able to traverse the mental landscape of our mind, to access our memories, both long term and short term. We need to remember names, places, high school sports games, fun nights out, quiet tender moments, brief episodes of beauty. Humans have the unique ability to look back on our lives, to revisit pleasant experiences. That's how we enrich our lives, it's how we extract the most amount of meaning and enjoyment from living. We have the moment, the past, and the future—and using our cognition, we can weave and blend them all together. Accessing memories improves our capacity to understand and enjoy the present moment and stride boldly into the future. If all we have is the fleeting present, we aren't really living our best life. It's in your best interest for any "longevity regimen" to directly address getting better in those two areas. Those are the two longevity markers I'm most interested in these days. What about you? What do you focus on? Are you able to traverse both mental and physical space? Let me know in the comment section of New and Noteworthy. |
