People make a big deal about introverts vs extroverts as distinct categories, but I’m not so sure it’s that clear cut.
I’ve always considered myself an introvert.
I’m perfectly happy and content being alone and in many cases prefer to be alone. Most of my play time these days is solitary. Standup paddling, fat biking, crosswords, sudoku, and a dozen other puzzles and riddle games. When I was younger, I ran marathons, alone. I did triathlons, alone. I even painted houses alone—running up ladders, grabbing supplies, mixing paint all by myself—until the scale of the business required partners.
And yet I enjoy being around people, too. I thrive in small groups and even large ones, particularly when I’m “on.” I love taking people out on the paddle board and fat bike. I miss playing Ultimate Frisbee (damn hip). Back in my heavy endurance training days, I’d often run with groups through the Malibu hills. Dinner parties are some of my favorite ways to pass the night away.
What does that make me?
If I had to sum things up, I’m the most at peace alone but happiest with people.
