They have no value but they are everything

Happy Sunday folks.

It's the little things, isn't it?

Right now, it's a dewy early morning and I'm watching the sunrise through the prism of an enormous spider web that appears to have emerged overnight.

I'm not sure there's any "value" in gazing at this spider web. It doesn't have a quantifiable ROI. I'm probably, on paper, squandering some opportunity or another to improve my standing in the world.

All to watch the sunlight shimmer in the spider silk. But man, these little things—that aren't so little, actually—are everything. They provide a chance to pause between actions "that matter," to reside in that space after the last important thing and before the next. life is made up of those spaces, the moments that aren't discussed.

"So what'd you do today?"

You don't say "I smelled a really fragrant flower in the parking lot." You don't say "I felt the sun on my right arm in all its intensity."

You say "Oh man, I had like five Zoom meetings." You say "I went out to lunch at that new place."

And that's how it should be. Average person doesn't want to hear about the flower you smelled. I get that. That's not the point. The point is that those little moments in between are for YOU. They're for you to notice, immerse yourself in, and treasure. They're also everywhere if you just slow down and look.

If you can enjoy the little things in life, your life will be that much better because life is made up of little things. The everyday stuff we never pay attention to is almost limitless. If we can start paying attention to them, we become rich beyond our wildest imaginings.

What little things do you notice? Name four or five from the past week—can you do it?
