Mark Sisson with Coffee Cup

Happy Sunday, everyone.

For today's Sunday with Sisson, I have one message for you:

There are no free lunches in life. Everything has a cost.

I used to think this only applied to biology. As in, if you take some wonder nootropic that helps you stay up all night without any crash or comedown, there's going to be a toll you pay for that. Even if the "safety profile" looks good. There will be a cost somewhere down the line. You can't run on empty or get away with long term sleep restriction forever.

I now realize this applies across the board in all facets of life.

You take a shortcut in business. Maybe you scam someone to get over or you just don't hire the best person you can to save a little money. You will end up regretting those decisions down the line, guaranteed.

You see a twenty dollar bill fall out of someone's pocket on the street. They don't notice. You pick it up. If you hurry you could catch up to them. But it's a busy sidewalk and you're going the other direction. If you keep that $20, you'll pay for it. It may feel free at first but you'll pay later.

You had a great idea, but never followed through. You hesitated. Fear won the day. Oh well, at least you never actually lost anything, right, since you never got started? Wrong. Your heart knew the truth. Your heart was all in, but the rest of you got in the way. That's part of the toll. The rest is paid when you learn someone else arrived at your idea, did it worse than you were doing it, and still succeeded.

Keep that close to your chest. Engrave it in your synapses. There is no free lunch. Whenever you get that glimmer of a notion that you should do the thing or make a certain decision, LISTEN. Heed the call! Your heart, your conscience—they're on your side and they mean well. Listen to them!

Does anyone disagree? Do you have counterexamples? Let me hear all about them in the comment section of Weekly Link Love.

Thanks for reading.
