Happy Sunday, everyone. There's been some good news regarding sunlight and COVID. Nothing new to anyone who's been paying attention. Back when this whole thing got going last year, I predicted that sun exposure would play a big role for a number of reasons. It turns out that I was probably right. First, there was an observational study that found areas with the most sun exposure were more likely to have lower rates of COVID. Researchers controlled for tons of variables known to affect COVID severity and incidence, like ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and age, and the connection between sun exposure and COVID remained extremely strong. Interestingly, researchers also controlled for UVB, finding that UVA was a stronger predictor of COVID resistance. As I mentioned a long time ago, UVA light triggers nitric oxide production, another compound shown to have efficacy against COVID. Get a little extra vitamin D with Primal Sun.
Next there was an experimental study that found sunlight deactivates (kills, renders inert, nullifies, destroys) COVID particles 8 times faster than previously thought. They tested airborne viral particles and particles suspended in "simulated saliva." All manifestations were far more vulnerable to sunlight than scientists had been predicting/assuming. You put that together with the older research that found outdoor air simply isn't infectious, and we're getting somewhere. I feel safer than ever recommending that you and yours get the hell out of the house and into the sunlight. Into the fresh air, the forest, the swamp, the beach. The farmer's market. The barbecue. The park. The creek, the trail. Are you feeling more comfortable outdoors? You should be, if all this evidence is to be trusted. Outdoors is where we can bridge the gap between people who are really worried and downright scared of the virus and those who just want everything back to normal. It's a difficult situation to navigate, but I think the best place to do it is outside in the fresh air. How will you get outside this week?
