| | | NEW Peer-to-Peer support group for parents of children with disability We invite parents of children with disability in Cockburn to express their interest in establishing a community peer-to-peer support group. If you're experiencing isolation on your parenting journey or finding it challenging to connect with other like-minded parents for sharing and mutual support, this group could be just what you need. Come along to the first session to find out more. 23 November, 10am-12.30pm at For Life Skills Centre (83 Hamilton Road, Spearwood) This group has emerged from a local mother's passion to create a much-needed supportive and informative community space to help parents. We spoke to Sew Choo Loh and here is what she had to say: "Last year my teenage son was diagnosed with autism - it was a late diagnosis at age-13 due to lack of awareness. I recently connected with the City of Cockburn Community Development team and shared my story at the 'Connecting women in Cockburn' networking evening. I was shivering inside holding the microphone that night. My story resonated with a lot of people there and showed that’s it’s not just me who needs support. For the last 18 months I have been on a mission to seek information and support. Now I want to help create this community that I haven't been able to find in my extensive search; to educate and support others, be a parent voice, and share practical supports and services for parents of children with a disability. It's time we help ourselves, and others, who get it. This is very positive support from the City of Cockburn for community to improve wellbeing for people. We will drive this group with good intention and compassion." Sew Choo Loh (City of Cockburn resident and member of Disability Reference Group) This group is open to everyone. Please register your interest here: Peer to Peer Support Group. Or email customer@cockburn.wa.gov.au or call 08 94113444. |
