Mars Wrigley Is Already Signed on for Super Bowl 2021, Despite Uncertainty

Who had August 27 as the date of the first confirmed Super Bowl advertiser? Anyone? This year, that honor goes to Mars Wrigley, which revealed it will be touting one of its candy brands in the Super Bowl. A Super Bowl that may not even happen if NFL teams aren't able to follow in the NBA's and NHL's footsteps and keep Covid-19 out of the league.

Last year, Mars Wrigley touted Snickers with a memorable unity anthem that rivaled Coke's all-time great "Hilltop" ad (OK, not quite—Snickers' spot was more like its cynical little brother). [Watch it here.]

Advertisers are relying on the NFL given the potential dearth of high-profile shows, which won't air in the fall thanks to production issues associated with Covid-19. As a result, the NFL's ad inventory is more in demand. Perhaps Mars Wrigley's August play for a Super Bowl ad slot isn't as crazy or premature as it may initially seem. Check out our NFL season preview for advertisers here.

Walmart Teams Up With Microsoft on TikTok Bid

TikTok has had a wild ride over the past few months, and Thursday was certainly no different. Its CEO bounced about 100 days after announcing he was taking the job. Former Disney streaming head Kevin Mayer left the hugely popular app, explaining he didn't want to stick around for an acquisition—an acquisition that could leave him in a diminished role.

Speaking of acquisitions, Walmart confirmed to Adweek that it is fact joining Microsoft in an unlikely collaboration to land TikTok. It wouldn't be Walmart's first foray into buying an entertainment company.

Facebook Audience Network Felled by Apple's iOS 14

The Facebook Audience Network represents just over 1% of Facebook's total revenue, so Apple's attempts to increase privacy for iPhone users won't terribly damage Facebook's bottom line. Who will be hurt? Publishes and app developers who heavily rely on the FAN to support their businesses.

Analysis: Our team of ad-tech reporters and editors dug into what this means for publishers. It's not pretty.
