Super Tigers moving on from regional win

The LSU Tigers didn't dogpile after their 13-7 victory Monday over Oregon State that won them the NCAA Baton Rouge Regional.

But there was elation. And relief.

Relief that a team facing such high expectations is moving on to the super regional round. And just that they got through it, after two maddening weather delays Saturday and Sunday forced a Monday finish that didn't even include the "if necessary" Game 7.

It was a day of high drama on and off the field for the Tigers, with news breaking as the game ended that first-year pitching coach Wes Johnson (no relation to coach Jay Johnson) is leaving to become the head coach at Georgia. Wes Johnson will remain with the team the rest of the NCAA Tournament, whether that's just this weekend or on into the College World Series.

Jay Johnson, naturally, wants to remove as much drama from the equation as possible for his team. But the fact that his Tigers handled it, not just in this regional but the entire season, has helped propel them to a 46-15 record and to within two victories of the CWS.

For more about this specific victory, please check out our Three Strikes observations on the game, our story focusing on the surprising offensive contributions of outfielder Josh Pearson, and how LSU's offense overall has demonstrated it can help the Tigers win in multiple ways.

Who will LSU host in the super regional round? Quite the familiar foe. It's the Kentucky Wildcats, who battled back with a pair of victories over Indiana after an earlier loss to win their regional in Lexington. Kentucky will be making its second trip to Baton Rouge after losing two of three close games to the Tigers in April.

By the way, a total of six SEC teams (plus soon-to-be SEC member Texas) advanced to the super regionals.

If you're tired of our words at this point (those were links to a lot of them), our Michael Johnson also checks in with a photo gallery from Monday's game.

Finally, guess who's back on the LSU football team? If you said running back Tre Bradford, that's a pretty great guess.

Thanks for reading, subscribing and sticking around to end of this introductory section. If we had any super regional tickets, we'd surely give them to you.

As the road to Omaha continues ...
