It’s no secret that journalism is a hard business and that sustaining independent art journalism, in particular, can be very very challenging.
Hyperallergic is not backed by a wealthy patron, auction houses, galleries, or other market institutions, and as costs and uncertainties in the world continue to grow, we depend on reader support. Consider what the world of art media would look like without Hyperallergic. Many stories we published would not find a home anywhere else in our community.
Hyperallergic was the only art publication to provide original reporting from the January 6th insurrection in Washington, DC. We’ve also investigated the displeasure of Iraqi artists who were taken advantage of and silenced during a major exhibition at MoMA PS1, published an extensive series about the impact of NFTs on artists and the art world, and reported that a sacred Hindu object in Dallas was finally returned to Nepal after stories by Hyperallergic and other outlets covered its questionable origin.
We tell the stories others don’t, often tackling difficult topics that challenge the status quo while pushing institutions and individuals to serve the whole community and not simply be responsive to the super-rich or connected.
However, we can’t continue to do this work without your help.
If you are able, please support our independent journalism to help keep our reporting and criticism free and accessible to all.
In addition to supporting our work, Hyperallergic Members get our Members-only newsletter, a Hyperallergic tote bag, an ad-free reading experience, and more.
