Systemic change means changing who builds our systems.
Invent The pain and protest of the last two weeks has been the latest reminder that creating the change we need means taking action within our own communities, both physical and virtual. For a field that claims to value innovation and thinking differently, the tech industry is far too comfortable with the lack of diversity in our ranks. Creating opportunities in tech for people who have traditionally been excluded or underestimated isn’t just about benefiting those individuals, it’s about making sure a broad range of perspectives go into designing the platforms that shape our daily lives. Systemic change won’t happen without changing who builds our systems. Here’s a small selection of organizations explicitly dedicated to supporting members of the Black tech community, from kids writing their first lines of code to founders launching their first ventures. You can support their efforts. Post to their job boards. Sign up for their newsletters. Be part of the change that needs to happen.
