Thank you to everyone who has donated so generously to help the people of Syria as their country emerges from 14 years of civil war.
As a freeze on US foreign aid triggers a global funding crisis, your gifts are providing essential supplies that Syrian families need right now to survive. However, the pressure on resources in the shattered country means more support is urgently needed.
More than 350,000 Syrian refugees have returned to their homeland from neighbouring countries since the fall of the Assad regime, despite the enormous challenges they face.
Your kind gifts are helping Syrian refugees like Hassan Mohammad Alhassan, 80, as they make a longed-for return to their homeland.
Alhassan boarded a bus shortly after dawn in Amman, Jordan, dressed formally in a suit, tie and scarf bearing the Syrian flag. He sat quietly in his seat, smiling.
“Thirteen years have passed,” said Alhassan. “Now, as we return to our home country, it feels like being reborn.”
However, the Syria that Alhassan is returning to is devastated. Homes and communities have been shattered. Schools, hospitals, roads, energy and water systems lie in ruins.
Supporter, this is why your support has been so crucial.
Your impact:
Your donations are providing Syrian families with:
Transport home from neighbouring countries
Building repairs and shelter kits
Emergency cash payments to help cover rent, food, and medicine
Winter clothing and blankets.
"I feel so emotional to talk to people [like Alhassan] and hear their stories, hear their hopes and also their apprehension for what awaits them in a country on its knees after so many years of war and conflict. These people need support."
- Filippo Grandi, UN High Commissioner for Refugees, who was in Jordan to witness Alhassan and others depart for Syria.
Alhassan knows that his house in Syria is destroyed. “It needs repairs, and it will be costly,” he said.
After years of conflict and fear, Syrians are desperate for stability and peace. When asked why he’s willing to risk returning, Alhassan’s answer is simple,
“Because we will finally experience freedom and reconnect with our lives,” he says.
Syria is at a crossroads, but change is possible. Thank you, Supporter, for continuing to stand with Syrians in their time of greatest need.
With gratitude,
Trudi Mitchell CEO
