When famine was officially confirmed in North Darfur a few weeks ago, I wrote to you right away to ask for your help – and I’m so thankful for the incredible response I received.
Since then, generous supporters like you have stepped up to help vulnerable families survive conflict, starvation and disease in Sudan.
Supporter, with your help, emergency supplies are reaching people who’ve lost everything in this devastating war. Your donations are:
Providing vital supplies such as tents, blankets and mosquito nets
Distributing cash to help families buy food and medicine
Upgrading sanitation in busy camps that are vulnerable to cholera and other dangerous diseases
Supporting survivors of gender-based violence with counselling and referrals
Providing sport and entertainment activities for displaced children
This is making a huge difference for families like Sabra Mahamat’s.
When fighting intensified in El Geneina, Sabra and her children fled on foot, spending seven hours on the road in intense heat. They had to live at a transit centre for months before relocating to a refugee camp in Chad, where they were provided with safe shelter.
“We have much more privacy and security now,” Sabra says. “At the border, we did not have regular access to water. Now, we live less than 30 metres from the borehole and water point. My eldest daughter and I can easily walk to fetch water every day.”
Sabra and her daughters find solace in small acts of art – arranging stones in beautiful shapes around their shelter.
“I have less to worry about now, and I want something beautiful in my new home, something I can do with my girls.”
Sabra’s family has found safety and protection – thanks to kind individuals like you. But there are millions more in need. Conflict continues to escalate, and hunger and disease are spreading. Please donate now to help UNHCR reach more families with emergency aid.
Supporter, thank you for helping the people of Sudan survive this war. Your gifts are truly making a difference.
