IMPORTANT | | | Unprecedented Leak | Draft Opinion Suggests Supreme Court Will Overturn Roe v. Wade An initial draft majority opinion in which Justice Samuel Alito proclaimed, “Roe was egregiously wrong from the start,” was leaked to Politico. “We hold that Roe and Casey must be overruled,” he continued, referring to a 1992 ruling reinforcing most of the abortion-rights provisions of the landmark 1973 Roe case. The leak is unprecedented in the modern history of the court. While it’s no surprise the 6-3 conservative majority, engineered by former President Donald Trump, would slash abortion rights, many felt they might stop short of outright rejecting Roe. Things could still change when the Court publishes its final opinion in about two months. (Source: Politico) |

| | A Nation Divided | Ecstasy and Anguish: Reactions to the Abortion Rights Bombshell Reaction to the leaked Supreme Court opinion — which would return ruling on abortion to individual states — underscored the deep fault lines in America. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority leader Chuck Schumer, both Democrats, released a statement saying: “The Republican-appointed Justices’ reported votes to overturn Roe v. Wade would go down as an abomination, one of the worst and most damaging decisions in modern history.” Republicans lambasted the unprecedented leak while praising its contents: “If this is the Court’s opinion, it’s a heck of an opinion. Voluminously researched, tightly argued, and morally powerful,” said Trump acolyte Sen. Josh Hawley. (Source: Reuters) |

| | Israel Outraged | Russia’s Sergey Lavrov Claims Hitler ‘Had Jewish Blood’ When asked on Italian TV how Russia can claim it’s seeking to “denazify” Ukraine when President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is Jewish, Russia’s foreign minister replied: “I could be wrong, but Hitler also had Jewish blood. [Zelensky being Jewish] means absolutely nothing. Wise Jewish people say that the most ardent anti-Semites are usually Jews.” His comments have united Israelis across the political spectrum and, according to a Jerusalem Post op-ed, will likely spell the end of Israel remaining “neutral” on the Russian invasion. Israeli foreign minister Yair Lipid said, “The lowest level of racism against Jews is to accuse Jews themselves of antisemitism.” (Sources: Jerusalem Post, BBC) |

| | Hush Hush | Swiss Lawmakers To Debate Potential Change in Banking Secrecy Laws Oligarchs beware. Facing pressure from the United Nations, Swiss politicians will debate article 47, the country’s controversial banking secrecy law that makes it illegal under any circumstances to disclose information about a bank’s clients. The law also allows whistleblowers and journalists to be prosecuted for reporting on potential wrongdoing by account holders. Irene Khan, the U.N.’s special rapporteur for freedom of opinion and expression, said the article violated international law and basic human rights. “This is normally a problem in authoritarian states,” she said pointedly. Amendments to the law could be tabled as early as Friday. (Source: The Guardian) |

| INTRIGUING | | | ‘Thou Shalt Commit Adultery’ | Extremely Rare ‘Wicked’ Bible Discovered in New Zealand In a first for the Southern Hemisphere, a so-called “Wicked” Bible has been found in Christchurch. The notorious 1631 edition omits the word “not” from the seventh commandment, to urge, “thou shalt commit adultery.” When the error was discovered, printers Robert Barker and Martin Lucas were stripped of their printing license and ordered to pay a fine. The New Zealand copy was acquired in 2016 from the estate of a deceased British bookbinder who’d relocated to New Zealand. It was identified as a “Wicked” Bible in 2018 but kept secret to allow researchers and restorers to study and preserve it. (Source: The Guardian) |

| | Superpup | Three-Legged Goldendoodle Rescues Baby Otter From Icy River Six-year-old Gus, whose back leg was amputated earlier this year as part of his ongoing cancer treatment, leaped into the St. Croix River in Lakeland, Minnesota, while walking with his family. He swam far out into the river then returned to shore with a tiny baby otter in his mouth. After taking the otter home and washing the sand off, Gus’s owner Cleo Young rushed the rescued pup to the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center in Roseville. Staff said the otter should never have been in the river at that age and is unlikely to have survived without Gus’s intervention. (Source: CBS Minnesota) |

| | The Show Must Go On | As War Rages, Ballet Returns to Lviv With ‘Giselle’ Performance It’s just another night at the ballet — almost. After the message reminding patrons to turn off their phones, another plays: “Dear guest, our event will be suspended in case of air raid alert. Dancers and spectators must go to the bomb shelter situated in the theater.” Lviv National Opera was forced to shut its doors when Russia invaded Ukraine. But the western Ukrainian city has escaped almost entirely unscathed and normal life is returning to its elegant streets. “In my opinion, culture is obligatory, always, more so now,” said makeup artist Maria Malanchyn, who’s worked at the institution for five decades. | | What Took You so Long? | New Frog Discovered in Australia Is Already Endangered Since 2006, scientists have been poring over the DNA of the mountain frogs found only in the World Heritage-listed Gondwana rainforests in Queensland. The recent discovery of Philoria knowlesi — which comes in several shades of brown and emits a deep “bop”-like croak — brings the number of distinct endemic species to six. Problem is the Gondwana rainforests suffered catastrophic damage during the 2019-20 black summer bushfires, and P. knowlesi is already classified as endangered. A $3.85 million recovery fund for habitat conservation will aid rangers working to control feral pigs, stray cattle and weeds — and help reduce the risk of future bushfires. (Source: The Guardian) |

| | Magnificent Seventh | ‘The Rocket’ Wins Record-Equaling 7th World Snooker Championship Ronnie O’Sullivan warded off a spirited comeback from Judd Trump on Monday at the Crucible in Sheffield, England, to take the title 18-13. The 46-year-old — who’d led 12-5 overnight — became the tournament’s oldest-ever winner. “I was just glad to make a match out of it,” Trump said. “It’s been a pleasure to share a table with … the best player of all time.” Six-time champion Steve Davis was equally effusive: “The word ‘genius’ is bandied around a lot but he is a true genius of the game, and I think he has an eighth world title in him,” he said.
