(Pixabay)
Unlimited paid time off sounds like a stellar perk for employees, but it must be accompanied by a corporate culture that encourages workers to actually use the time. Otherwise, this policy might actually result in workers taking fewer vacation days than normal.

Benefits & Compensation
While 80% of company executives think they're doing a good job when it comes to employee health and wellness, only 46% of employees believe this to be true, based on a recent survey by the people analytics platform Visier. This discrepancy may be due to issues such as work-from-home policies, transparency of pandemic-related policies, and the lack of training and education to advance employee skills, all of which may be contributing to employee burnout.

Kanoe Namahoe 2022
Kanoe Namahoe
My son, Kiaha, and I were talking about our trip to Hawaii and how much time he’d be able to spend there. He explained that he got two weeks of paid vacation and planned to use most of that on this trip.

“Nice,” I said and then continued without thinking. “I have unlimited paid time off so that helps.”

He just stared. “Well, excuuuuuse me,” he finally said, sarcastically, making a face. “Must be nice!” I just laughed and changed the subject.

Unlimited paid time off can be successful provided your organization’s culture supports it, as we see in our top story today. Future PLC, SmartBrief’s parent company, does this. It offers unlimited paid time off and management -- including our CEO Zillah Byng-Thorne -- encourages us to take the time we need to tend to our families and personal priorities. My manager, Megan, has made a point of reminding us directors to schedule time off each quarter.

Are you offering unlimited paid time off? How are you nurturing it in your culture? Do employees use the time? Let me know! And if you enjoy this brief, tell others so they can benefit also.
