Employers are taking a closer look at their employee benefit offerings this year as the workforce market tightens, according to Willis Towers Watson's 2021 Benefits Trends Survey. More than two-thirds of employers said they plan to make employee wellness a top priority over the next two years and they will redesign benefit offerings for a higher level of customization, all in an effort to retain and attract talent.

United to put employees who get vaccine exemptions on leave

United Airlines employees who receive religious exemptions from COVID-19 vaccination will be put on unpaid leave status and workers receiving medical exemptions will be placed on medical leave. Those whose jobs do not require contact with customers can return to work once protective protocols are put in place, while unvaccinated crew members like pilots, flight attendants and gate agents will not be able to return to work until "the pandemic meaningfully recedes."

Nearly 75% of US employees would prefer at least one day per week at home rather than being on-site every day, despite interest in the collaboration of in-office work arrangements, according to a survey commissioned by flexible-workspace provider IWG. The results also suggest that many Americans want shorter commutes than they had before the pandemic.

It took nearly four weeks of snorkeling expeditions off the coast of Queensland, Australia, for coral reef ecologist Kristen Brown to capture a photo of a group of jack fish swimming together, forming a colorful spiral. The photo recently won the top prize in the inaugural BMC Ecology and Evolution image competition.
