CARJACKING ARREST: The NOPD made an arrest in last week's Costco carjacking. 18-year-old Tyrese Harris is accused of jumping into the car of a local real estate agent getting gas at the big-box retailer Tuesday and driving away, dragging and injuring her in the process. The incident drew further attention to the spike in violent crime during the pandemic, and to carjackings in particular, which have skyrocketed. In other vehicle-related crime news, police have released very few details about a rash of car break-ins Saturday night, when Chewbacchus drew many vehicles into the neighborhoods surrounding the French Quarter and the Marigny. NOPD said there were break-ins on St. Claude Avenue, but unconfirmed social media reports suggest there could be more. Meanwhile, the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office just reported crime in the unincorporated areas of the parish is at its lowest level since 1974.
KAMARA ARRESTED: Saints star running back Alvin Kamara was arrested in Las Vegas in connection with the battery of an unidentified person who went to an area hospital Saturday. Las Vegas police announced the arrest Sunday evening, after Kamara turned himself in hours after playing in the Pro Bowl.
RACKETEERING APPEAL: Several members of New Orleans' most notorious street gang, including its leader, Telly Hankton, are trying to get the racketeering convictions that sent them to prison for life thrown out. Reporter John Simerman has the details.
