Welcome to the Sustainable Living eNews - School Holiday Special. This special edition of the eNews is full of fun events to keep the kids busy these school holidays. If your kids love being outdoors, learning about nature or want to get hands on with native animals then we have the activities for you.

WA Wildlife Spring School Holiday Program 


WA Wildlife (formerly Native ARC) is a volunteer-run animal rescue centre in Bibra Lake, that provides medical care and rehabilitation services for injured native wildlife. The WA Wildlife school holiday program is a partnership with the City of Cockburn. All sessions are suitable for children aged 5-12 years (and adults, too!).

Turtles and Reptiles

Friday 30 Sept, 10am-12pm
Turtles and reptiles are on the move with the warming weather! Learn how we can help our turtles, be reptile aware, and of course, meet some of our residents!

Nocturnal Night Stalk

Wednesday 5 Oct, 6:30pm-8:30pm
Who might you encounter after dark in the Beeliar Wetlands? Come join us for a night stalk in the bush. Learn about the wildlife who start their day when the sun goes down, and meet some of our night-friendly residents.

WA Wildlife - Habitats and Handicrafts

Friday 7 Oct, 10am-12pm
Learn about our local native animals, where they live and how we can help them, all while making keepsakes to take home, and of course, meet some of our residents!

Know Your Patch & Nearer to Nature

In partnership with Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions - Parks and Wildlife Service the Know Your Patch and Nearer to Nature programs provide opportunities for children of all ages to take part in hands-on, experiential learning in the natural environment and inspire the community to conserve and protect their local environment.

Wild About Flowers

Our forests, woodlands, swamps and riverbanks come to life with rainbows of colour as wildflowers start to bloom. Investigate different colours and shapes of our beautiful, local flower display as we journey through the woodland in search of wildflowers. Discover how pollinators help plants grow by visiting a range of flowers and then travel through the seasons as we explore the different times of years that our beautiful natives bloom.

This activity is suitable for children 4-7 years of age.

Seize and Capture

Could you tell the difference between a kite and a hawk, an eagle and a harrier? Head out on a scavenger hunt and collect clues to discover the differences between some common Perth raptors. Discover how these feathered flyers hunt, shape their wings to dive and attack or soar. Then have a meet and greet with theses majestic birds.

This is a 'drop and leave' activity suitable for children 7-12 years of age.

Get Wild About Wetlands


Run by the City of Cockburn in partnership with The Wetlands Centre, Cockburn, these wetlands themed school holiday activities are a hands-on way to learn more about our wetlands and natural environment. Registrations are essential so get in quick!

Bat Night Stalk

Sunday 2 Oct, 6.30-8pm 

Check your bat facts with local bat expert Joe Tonga, as you explore the bushland of Bibra Lake on an evening adventure. Ages 5-12 years

Nature Storytime Trek

Monday 3 Oct, 9.30-11am 

We’ll be reading books featuring native animals and the natural environment and then go for a guided trek to see what we can spot. Ages 2-5 years

Henderson Waste Recovery Park Tour

This special school holiday tour is a great way for families to find out what happens to the waste we produce.

Come for a FREE behind-the-scenes tour of the waste recovery park and discover the amazing world of waste.

Learn how waste can be minimised and avoided, reused and recycled into new products and how we convert waste gas into electricity.

Visit the popular Reuse Shop to pick up a few bargains along the way! 

Meet at City of Cockburn Administration Building car park (near the main steps to the Spearwood Library) to jump on our community bus, departing 9.35am sharp.

Boredom buster to keep kids occupied

Every school holidays, the City of Cockburn hosts a range of fun and educational events and workshops for young people aged from two to 17. The full list of what’s on is available online, where you can also find out further details or register to attend: www.cockburn.wa.gov.au/Events
 
The activities are free or heavily subsidised and available to all Cockburn residents. There's a range of things to do spanning a variety of interests, from beach-combing workshops and Rottnest Island day trips to bat tours or a visit to Adventure World!
