 School Holiday Special!

 
Summer is here and we're ready for the holidays. This special edition of the Sustainable Living eNews is packed full of fun events to keep the kids busy these school holidays. If your kids love being outdoors, learning about nature or want to get hands on with native animals then we have the activities for you. All events are low cost and family friendly. Be sure sign up quick, these will fill up fast!

WA Wildlife Spring School Holiday Program 


WA Wildlife (formerly Native ARC) is a volunteer-run animal rescue centre in Bibra Lake that provides medical care and rehabilitation services for injured native wildlife. The WA Wildlife school holiday program is supported by the City of Cockburn. All sessions are suitable for children aged 5-12 years (and adults, too!).

Turtles & Reptiles  

Tuesday 20 Dec, 10am-12pm

Turtles & reptiles are out and about! Meet our reptiles and Tom the turtle while learning how we can help our turtles and be reptile aware.

Nocturnal Night Stalk 

Thursday 5 Jan, 6.30-8.30pm 

Bring a torch and join us for a bush night stalk. Learn about the wildlife who start their day when the sun goes down and meet some of our night-friendly residents. 

Habitats & Handicrafts

Tuesday 10 Jan, 10am-12pm

Roll up your sleeves for some crafting! Learn about our local native animals, where they live, how we can help them, and make keepsakes to take home!

A Day in the Life 

Tuesday 24 Jan, 10am-12pm

Come find out about the amazing work our vets, volunteers and rescuers do every day. Help us help wild lives live and meet some of our resident animals.

Nature Storytime Trek


Back for 2023 and better than ever, Cockburn Libraries is partnering with the City's Sustainability and Climate Change Environmental Education Officers to deliver these amazing events for children aged 2-5 years. Each school holidays we will get out into nature, read some books, learn bushwalking tips, and go for a walk, all while using our senses to learn about the world around us. 
Unfortunately not all venues have toilet facilities, please check the specific venue information.

Wednesday 11 Jan, 9.30-10.30am

Build a beach and test the impact of coastal waves, storm surges and rising sea levels. Explore how coastal erosion shapes our coastlines and affects the marine and coastal environment. Find out what we can do to protect our coast and how the City of Cockburn are using artificial reefs!

Suitable for children 7-15 years of age. 
Free, registrations are essential.

Get Wild About Wetlands School Holiday Program

These wetlands themed school holiday activities are a hands-on way to learn more about our natural environment. Run by The Wetlands Centre and supported by the City of Cockburn.
Registrations are essential so get in quick!

Brekkie with Birdies with Felicity and Birdlife Australia

Tuesday 17 Jan, 8-9.30am 

Enjoy a refreshing start to the day with your favourite wetland birds and a light brekkie.  Hosted by The Wetlands Centre and Birdlife Australia this event includes a short walk and light refreshments. 

Booyi Storytelling and Art

Wednesday 18 Jan, 1-3pm 

Listen to the stories of our precious Southwestern Snake-Necked turtle, or Booyi, learn about the Nyungar language and create wonderful art. 

"Chicken Licken" Puppet Show with Adam Bennett from SciTech

Thursday 19 Jan, 10-12pm

Join Adam and Chicken Licken on this adventurous, engaging and puppet-y tale popularly showcased at SciTech. Plus learn to create your own shadow puppets to take home! 

Poetry Writing for Nature Explorers with Lakshmi Kanchi

Saturday 21 Jan, 10.30am-12.30pm 
Have a play with language and words as we explore a bush trail around Bibra Lake. Uncover beautiful nature, interesting plants and animals, and their cool features that spark the imagination. 

DNA Detectives with Pauline Charman

Monday 23 Jan, 10-11.30am 

Put on a lab coat and gloves like a REAL scientist and take a deep dive into the world of DNA in this fun activity designed for curious and intelligent minds.

Know Your Patch & Nearer to Nature


Know Your Patch and Nearer to Nature programs provide opportunities for children to take part in hands-on, experience-based learning in the natural environment and inspire the community to conserve and protect their local environment. 

Activities include shipwreck snorkelling, ocean side explorations, wildflower walks and more! 

Run in partnership with Parks and Wildlife Service, these programs are run every school holidays and City of Cockburn residents can receive 50% off tickets!

Boredom busters to occupy the kids

Every school holidays, the City of Cockburn hosts a range of fun and educational events and workshops for young people aged from two to 17. The full list of what’s on is available online, where you can also find out further details or register to attend: www.cockburn.wa.gov.au/Events
 
The activities are free or heavily subsidised and available to all Cockburn residents. There's a range of things to do spanning a variety of interests, from beach-combing workshops and Rottnest Island day trips to bat tours or a visit to Adventure World!
