Incessant smoke, illness, death, but no emergency response for New Orleans East

The swamp fire that began in October in New Orleans East produced thick, foul-smelling smoke for weeks, public health warnings, a spike in hospital visits by asthma sufferers, highway closures and several traffic wrecks that killed eight people. Yet Mayor LaToya Cantrell’s administration not only failed for almost a week to respond, it never declared the fire an emergency, which could have drawn federal and state firefighting personnel, vehicles and equipment. 

Despite all the touted health benefits of breastfeeding, only four physicians in all Louisiana specialize in the practice. Meet the Metairie-based doctor whom one grateful patient calls “the patron saint of boobs.” 

On college football game day, LSU came from behind in the regular season finale to defeat Texas A&M, 42-30, and Southern edged Grambling State, 27-22, in the 50th edition of the Bayou Classic.
