In 2009, a group of beekeepers successfully obtained a proclamation from the USDA that recognized the importance of honey bees and beekeeping. The first observation of National Honey Bee Day took place on August 22, 2009 (the fourth Saturday of August), but it has since been permanently moved to the third Saturday of August.
