Let the Countdown Begin: A Look At the Returning NCAA Champions

With 2022 now upon us, the countdown to the NCAA Championships has started. The women’s championship meet is scheduled for March 16-19 at the McAuley Aquatic Center in Atlanta, with the men participating in their championship competition at the same venue a week later (March 23-26).

Virginia is the reigning champion on the women’s side and will be fueled by Olympic medalists Alex Walsh, Kate Douglass and Emma Weyant. On the men’s side, Texas will chase its 16th NCAA title behind the likes of senior leaders Drew Kibler and Daniel Krueger, and multi-event standout Carson Foster.

Swimming World is publishing the following letter submitted by Sharon Weiss, a former Division I swimmer at the University of Arizona.

While the NCAA is “a member-led organization dedicated to the well-being and lifelong success of college athletes,” its silence regarding UPenn swimmer Lia Thomas is not only deafening, but appears to be eroding its stated pledge. By now, we have seen the NCAA’s transgender policy, which states: “A trans female treated with testosterone suppression medication may continue to compete on a men’s team but may not compete on a women’s team without changing it to a mixed team status until completing one year of testosterone suppression treatment.” But what is the basis for this ruling?

Thomas Heilman A Rising Star After National Age Group Record Blitz

Over a 10-day stretch of racing, Thomas Heilman threatened a record every time he dove into the pool. Heilman, 14, had made his debut racing against the best swimmers in the country one year earlier at the multi-site U.S. Open, but he became a headliner for the first time this year. Competing on back-to-back weekends in Greensboro, N.C., Heilman took down long course National Age Group records in four events at the U.S. Open, and shortly after, he broke NAG marks in four short course yards events.
