England Names Athletes to Commonwealth Team, Texas Women Edge NC State, FINA Confirms Worlds Postponement, New USA Swimming Transgender Policy, and Addressing the Physical Comparison of Female Swimmers 

Adam Peaty & Tom Dean Among 10 On England Commonwealth Team; Mel Marshall Named Head Coach

Olympic champions Adam Peaty, Tom Dean and Anna Hopkin are among the first 10 swimmers to be selected to Team England for the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham in July.

That follows their fellow Tokyo gold medallists Duncan Scott and Kathleen Dawson being named to Team Scotland last month.

Mel Marshall – who guided Peaty, Hopkin and Luke Greenbank to six medals in Tokyo – will be head coach of Team England.

Texas Edges NC State in Intense Women’s Dual Meet; Nyls Korstanje Blasts 44.76 100 Fly

The most anticipated college dual meet of the day took place in Raleigh, where the North Carolina State women’s team hosted Texas, less than a year after the Wolfpack edged the Longhorns by 9.5 points for second place at the NCAA Championships. But in this dual meet showdown, Texas edged out NC State by a 156.5-to-143.5 margin. Meanwhile, the NC State men were also in action against UNC-Wilmington, a team now led by longtime NC State assistant Bobby Guntoro, and the Wolfpack won every event on the way to a 187-86 win.

FINA Confirms Fukuoka Worlds Rescheduled For July 2023; Doha Edition Switched To January 2024

FINA has confirmed the World Championships in Fukuoka, Japan, have been rescheduled for July 2023 with the Doha, Qatar, edition pushed back to January 2024.

The 19th worlds were initially scheduled for May 2022 but following consultation between the world federation and the Fukuoka 2022 Organising Committee, all parties agreed to delay the meet in order to “ensure a safe and successful event for everyone involved” given the impact of the Omicron covid variant.

USA Swimming Releases New Transgender Athlete Policy; Evidence of Mitigation Required

In response to the growing awareness regarding gender inclusion and equity, USA Swimming has released a new policy concerning the topic.

This issue of transgender women competing in women’s sports has continued to grow in the past few months, mostly surrounding Penn swimmer Lia Thomas, a transgender athlete who competed for the Penn men’s team for three years before completing the required one year of “testosterone supression treatment” in order to be eligible to compete as a female.

While Thomas has continued to follow all of the rules, many have argued that her situation goes against equity in women’s competition. As a result, USA Swimming drafted new guidelines.

Addressing The Taboo Topic Of Constant Physical Comparison Among Female Swimmers

“Am I skinny enough?”

“Does my body look like hers?”

“Do I look okay in this bathing suit?”

“How can I get my body to look like that?”

“Why can she fit in the smaller suit and I can?”

“Does she think I look fat?” 

These questions are the reality of what goes on in the mind of a female swimmer. Not only are girls competing and comparing their times inside the water, but they are also comparing themselves based on how they look physically. Swimmers from a very young age are accustomed to being in a swimsuit every day and wearing it like a jersey or uniform. There is nothing special about it and it isn’t anything to think about for many young swimmers. But as girls get older, they become more conscious about how they look and feel in a bathing suit. They also get the idea that others are judging them for their appearance on the pool deck.
