Peaking At The Right Time, Sarah Sjostrom Poised For Big Showing in Budapest

Perhaps one of the most underappreciated moments at last summer’s Olympic Games was the silver medal by longtime superstar Sarah Sjostrom in the 50-meter freestyle. En route to that podium finish, one of just four by European women, the Swede completed her comeback from a fractured elbow in February of the rescheduled Olympic campaign.

Considering the training interruption caused by her injury, Sjostrom was magnificent in winning a medal, and advancing to the finals of the 100 freestyle (fifth) and 100 butterfly (seventh). Sjostrom’s efforts were proof of her championship pedigree and mental toughness. There’s a reason she is a lock for eventual induction into the International Swimming Hall of Fame.

Kelsi Dahlia Announces Retirement After Decorated Career in Sprint Butterfly Events

After a lengthy run as one of the top sprint butterfly specialist in the United States and in the world, Kelsi Dahlia has announced her retirement from swimming. The 27-year-old originally from Westampton, N.J., and a graduate of the University of Louisville, Dahlia was a multi-time NCAA champion during her career with the Cardinals, an Olympian for the United States in 2016 (where she won gold in the 400 medley relay as a prelims swimmer) and an individual bronze medalist at the 2017 World Championships in the 100 butterfly.

Dahlia narrowly missed qualifying for the 2021 Olympic team as she finished fourth in the 100 fly at Olympic Trials, but she rebounded less than six months later to set the world record in the short course meters 100 fly in December 2021, a mark which still stands. Last month, she placed third in the 100 fly at the U.S. International Team Trials in Greensboro, N.C., and that turned out to be her last race.

Lia Thomas Breaks Silence to ABC, ESPN: ‘Trans Women Competing … Doesn’t Threaten Women’s Sports’

Lia Thomas is breaking her silence on her participation in women’s swimming.

The University of Pennsylvania swimmer, who was the first transgender swimmer to win an NCAA championship, gave an on-air interview to ABC News and ESPN, Thomas’ first comments since competing in March.

With the exception of the on-deck TV interview after winning the NCAA championship in the 500 freestyle, Lia Thomas hadn’t spoken to any media outlet since Sports Illustrated, prior to the NCAA Championships. Guest Commentary – By Audrey Richardson

Even a year and a half after former Michigan State athletic director Bill Beekman broke the news to my teammates and I, we’re still bitter.

I’m told I need to move on, find another hobby and leave the sport that has molded my identity since I was 4 years old.

Eighteen months is a long time. I’m beating a broken drum. Why are we still talking about it? Why can’t we let it go?
