Where's Johnny Jet?

Happy New Year! This is my first newsletter of 2020 and I’m a little late sending it out for a number of reasons but mostly because it’s always crazy busy after the holidays and life with two little ones makes it even crazier. Time is flying and it’s mind-boggling to think that 2050 is now closer than 1990.

Another reason why I waited a week is that the fires in Australia, the earthquakes in Puerto Rico and the Ukrainian Airlines crash were making me depressed. Here’s how to help Australia and Puerto Rico.

Then yesterday, a Delta Air Lines flight heading to China quickly returned from LAX and made a fuel dump over an elementary school instead of the ocean. Not sure what the pilots were thinking as that’s beyond ridiculous and makes Delta look really bad. They have set up a help line (800-441-5955) for anyone who was affected by the dump.

Speaking of looking really bad: Major League Baseball. I know it doesn’t have much to do with travel (although many pass time watching baseball while on work trips and visit ballparks to see a game), but it's a sport that I love. And I just can’t believe the Houston Astros stooped so low to steal signs by recording them. MLB really should take away their World Series title and any awards like batting titles (ahem, Altuve). Read this ESPN story to see all the lives affected.

I'll be speaking at the New York Times Travel Show on January 23
If you’re going to be in New York City next week I’m speaking on a panel at the New York Times Travel Show on Friday, January 23. It’s the trade/media day. The consumer days are Saturday and Sunday but I won’t be there on the weekend as I have a prior engagement.

Scottevest: 15% off!
Through the end of the month (January 31), Scottevest's latest sale includes 15% off site-wide (except gift cards and items in the outlet section). Just use code AFJ15 to save. I use Scottevest products every time I travel because their multiple hidden pockets not only keep my valuables safe but can act as an extra carry-on, as well. Check out the collection here!

Companies I work with and recommend
Allianz (travel insurance), Amazon (travel gadgets and supplies), Blacklane (reliable car service), Bluffworks (wrinkle-free clothing), Booking.com (hotel deals), Hotspot Shield (VPN to protect your data and get cheaper travel deals), Medjet (medical evacuation and transport), Scottevest (travel clothes).
