Take a hike! Pack a lunch!

We live in a beautiful country. Chances are, there are trails all around that you can explore.

The last four places that I've lived--Idaho, North Carolina, Minnesota, and Alaska--had great places to hike, some close enough to take after work and others more suitable for a Saturday.

It's easy to find these hikes on the internet. You'll find trail guides and usually, printable maps. There are inexpensive aps that will track your hike with GPS and calculate distance, time, and elevation gained. You can calculate calories burned. They will show you where you are and let you retrace your steps. They'll make hiking more fun.

If you go, pack a lunch. Merri Ann takes a light nylon tarp for a picnic blanket. Here's a lunch that I packed for my sweetheart:

Gouda Cheese and hard crackers
An apple and an orange
A spinach salad with sliced breast of chicken and poppy seed dressing
