Over the next 10 years, satellite companies plan to launch 38,000 “micro satellites” — satellites that weigh 22 to 220 pounds.

They’re a cost-effective, flexible alternative to conventional satellites that are expensive to build and launch, and usually weigh more than a ton.

The problem is we don’t have the capacity to launch such a large number of satellites…

…especially now that Elon Musk is allocating more and more of SpaceX’s payload capacity to his Starlink project and focusing so much of his attention on getting to Mars.

As a result, the industry is facing a backlog of 2,000 satellites waiting to be launched.
