Sleep deprivation and fatigue has long been a concern of the GME community. To address these issues, in 2003 the ACGME Common Program Requirements capped the number of hours residents may work in a week, and subsequent revisions have addressed residents’ maximum shift lengths. Further, Common Program Requirement VI.D. specifically addresses fatigue and the program’s role in educating residents and faculty to recognize the signs of fatigue and sleep deprivation.
