~Paulo Coelho Although we didn’t know it at the time, the forlorn, foul-smelling dog we reluctantly brought home from the shelter had already been adopted and returned three times. The volunteer, who could have sold rusted-out used cars for a living, told us the 120-pound mongrel was “overdue on his rent,” meaning that he was going to be destroyed if no one adopted him that day! Looking like the schmucks we were, we signed the papers and opened the back door of our tiny car.
