What Community Colleges Need to Thrive

Taking Noncredit Programs to Scale

Nondegree, noncredit programs have been a staple at community colleges for decades, but they have become increasingly popular as more students and families look for value and speedier ways to award credentials. These programs, however, come with their share of challenges. Federal financial aid is currently ineligible for non-degree certificates, which makes them difficult to afford for lower-income learners. They are also expensive to maintain, requiring instructors to be familiar with the latest practices and up-to-date equipment.

How can community colleges and states better integrate noncredit programs into their planning to get the most value from them?

What Community Colleges Need to Thrive identifies strategies and approaches forward-thinking leaders are using to tackle the sector's most pressing challenges and where they can play a larger role in higher ed. It focuses on specific areas vital to future success for two-year institutions, including two of the most important: resources and leadership.
