with Matthew Albright | Assistant metro editorGood morning, and welcome to the week. Here's some of our most interesting reads from yesterday. The end of the 'Forever War'President Joe Biden has declared that the U.S. is pulling out of Afghanistan, ending the longest war in American history. We talked to several Louisianans who served in the long conflict, including several who signed up after 9/11. We heard a lot of very mixed feelings about the withdrawal. Veterans said they were glad to see the end of a conflict that damaged so many lives and families, but were also worried about what the withdrawal means for the country they fought in. Read this story to see the complicated emotions these veterans are feeling. An exclusive investigationA Louisiana law enforcement officer has now resigned from two different agencies because of two separate investigations into possible misconduct. Our investigative reporters followed the paper trail, and it raises questions about how officers are disciplined and hired in Louisiana. See what the accusations against the officer are in this report. If you want to support this kind of investigative reporting, you can directly support the reporters' work by contributing to the Louisiana Investigative Journalism Fund here. Return of the Lincoln Theater? In the '50s and '60s, the Lincoln Theater was a cultural centerpiece of Baton Rouge's African American community. The theater was, for a time, the main place for Black residents to see a show, and boy did it host some good ones: Nat King Cole, Ella Fitzgerald and James Brown played it, among others. The building is now in disrepair, but a nonprofit group is trying to restore it and turn it into a cultural center and museum. You can read about the place's historical importance and the status of its rebirth here. Thanks for reading, and have a great week. |
