Tamir Rice: The Justice Department on Tuesday officially closed the investigation into the 2014 police shooting of 12-year-old Tamir Rice, declaring there was insufficient evidence to charge the officers involved in the boy’s death. The lack of charges angered the boy’s mother, Samaria Rice. “It’s a horrible feeling,” she tells John Caniglia. “It really is. It continues to show how broken the system is.” The release comes a month after Samaria Rice and attorneys for her family sharply criticized Justice Department officials and demanded to know why they failed to convene a grand jury.
Hopkins traffic: It appears health officials' pleas for people to stay home for the holidays during the coronavirus pandemic are not having much impact. Susan Glaser reports that Cleveland Hopkins International Airport on Sunday saw its highest number of departing passengers since mid-March. The Transportation Security Administration screened 10,369 departing passengers at Hopkins’ three checkpoints on Dec. 27. Despite the recent uptick in air travel, both in Cleveland and nationwide, the number of Americans flying is down dramatically from a year ago.
Qualifications questioned: One of the seven men selected by Cuyahoga County Executive Armond Budish as finalists for sheriff appears to lack the type of college degree required under the county charter to hold the job next year. Courtney Astolfi reports the resume for Steven Hammett, the current chief of public safety for the Cleveland Institute of Art, lists only an associate’s degree in fine arts. The county's charter sets the minimum educational requirement for sheriff at an associate’s degree in law enforcement or criminal justice. Project financing: Gov. Mike DeWine signed a bill into law Tuesday that will provide $22.8 million in construction and renovation projects in Cuyahoga County, including the Cleveland Museum of Natural History, the City Block redevelopment plan in Tower City, and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The $22.8 million going to Cuyahoga County is part of $171.4 million going to local projects throughout the state, Laura Hancock reports.
New numbers: The number of new coronavirus cases was 7,526 on Tuesday, according to the Ohio Department of Health, bringing the total to 682,570. The number of people who have died with COVID-19 increased by 151 to 8,722. Laura Hancock reports Tuesday’s case count is below the 21-day rolling average of 8,217.
