Media Winners & Losers

MEDIA WINNER:
Jake Tapper

CNN's Jake Tapper pressed Rep. Zoe Lofgren (D-CA) on the Jan. 6 Committee's next hearings during a new interview, despite the fact that she played her cards close to the chest throughout.

The committee is scheduled to resume hearings on Tuesday, weeks after the surprise bombshell testimony from Cassidy Hutchinson, the former top aide to Trump White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows.

Tapper asked Lofgren all the right questions on Sunday, questioning the possibility of a live hearing with Steve Bannon, as well as the 8 hours of testimony the committee received from former Trump White House Counsel Pat Cipollone.

Lofgren remarked upon the significance of Cippollone’s appearance during a previous interview with CNN’s Wolf Blitzer, in which she claimed that Cipollone “did not contradict” Hutchinson and other committee witnesses.

While speaking to Tapper, she once again insisted the testimony was “important,” but couldn’t elaborate on the details in advance because “the committee rules don’t allow us to disclose the testimony without a vote of the committee.”

Tapper continued to push Lofgren on the testimony regardless of her understandably tight-lipped response, noting that one of the biggest parts of Hutchinson’s testimony was when she said Cipollone told her “we’re going to be charged with every crime imaginable” if ex-President Donald Trump went to the U.S. Capitol on January 6.

“Two sources told CNN that the committee did not ask Pat Cipollone whether he said that,” Tapper said. “Is that true? If so, why wouldn’t you ask him that?”

"We never call in witnesses to corroborate other witnesses or to give their reaction to other witnesses. But I will say that he did interview with us for eight hours and provide very insightful information," Lofgren responded.

"And that augments and certainly does not dispute Miss Hutchinson’s testimony. So stay tuned for this week’s hearings. We think they’ll be worth attending."

MEDIA LOSER:
Jennifer Orsi

Newspaper opinion pages are often criticized for having a political bias, but one Florida paper showed the pitfalls of a poorly-executed attempt to tell both sides of the story.

An op-ed published on Sunday by the Sarasota Herald-Tribune, titled, “Attacking Proud Boys does a disservice to caring school parents,” defended local school board candidates’ alleged association with the Proud Boys.

The column claimed the group’s members, many of whom have been charged with serious felonies related to the Jan. 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol, were simply “caring parents” who were being unfairly attacked for their conservative political views.

Oh, and the paper failed to disclose the author, Melissa Radovich, was married to a Proud Boy herself.

The article garnered such an intense backlash that it was deleted on Monday, with the paper publishing a message to their readers from executive editor Jennifer Orsi.

While Orsi stressed that Radovich’s op-ed did not meet the outlet's standards, she never directly addressed the Herald-Tribune’s failure to disclose Radovich’s marriage to a Proud Boy.

“The Herald-Tribune opinion page will not provide a forum for support of the Proud Boys, an extremist group that promotes white nationalist views, has been labeled a terrorist group by two countries, and has top members under indictment on charges of seditious conspiracy in the Jan. 6 Capitol attack," Orsi vowed retroactively.

Radovich had penned the op-ed in response to a Herald-Tribune guest column published in late June by Lisa Gialdini Schurr, which called on Sarasota school board candidates to “show some courage” and “call out the Proud Boys.”

“When I think about the Proud Boys, I think of fathers, business owners and veterans," Radovich wrote in response.

"These fathers have spoken at many School Board meetings. They are concerned about the direction that their local schools are heading in, and I commend them for coming to School Board meetings.”

The A-Block

Jan. 6 whiplash

After fighting it for months, Steve Bannon seems to have suddenly reversed course, claiming he will testify before the Jan. 6 committee.

According to the New York Times, which obtained two letters confirming, Bannon’s attorney told the committee that former President Donald Trump has authorized his ex-chief strategist to testify.

The attorney, Robert Costello, told Committee chair Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-MI) in the letter that Bannon wants to appear live before the nation, rather than behind closed doors.

“Mr. Bannon is willing to, and indeed prefers, to testify at your public hearing,” Costello said.

Costello reportedly provided a letter that was written by Trump and addressed to Bannon.

“When you first received the subpoena to testify and provide documents, I invoked executive privilege,” Trump reportedly wrote.

“However, I watched how unfairly you and others have been treated, having to spend vast amounts of money on legal fees and all of the trauma you must be going through for the love of your country and out of respect for the office of the president."

Trump went on to promise to "waive executive privilege for" Bannon if he testified, adding that it allows Bannon to "go in and testify truthfully and fairly, as per the request of the unselect committee of political thugs and hacks.”

Bannon’s claims he is willing to testify come as he faces trial on two counts of Contempt of Congress — in a proceeding that is slated to begin in a week

Both counts stem from Bannon’s previous refusal to comply with the committee’s investigation.

Pointing to Bannon's previous refusal, CNN’s Jeffrey Toobin doubted that he would actually testify this time, suggesting that the reports to the contrary are all part of his usual schemes to sow discord.

“He’s probably not gonna testify anyway, because all he wants to do is put on a show, and he has more or less acknowledged he’s not gonna turn over the documents that the committee wants,” he said.

“This is a total sideshow. I anticipate the judge will simply say ‘Let’s go to trial. Let’s try what happened 9 months ago because that’s the only issue in this case.”

The Justice Department has also cast doubt on Bannon's "last minute" reversal, calling it "irrelevant."
