TODAY'S TOP STORYThis year’s tech naughty listOnce Christmas music starts playing, the trees go up and the wish lists are compiled, I know an email I'll get: Mozilla's latest warning about popular tech gifts that are just awful when it comes to privacy. This year's *Privacy Not Included guide ranks over 150 gadgets across different categories by what data they collect and what they do with it. Mozilla does a great job at these lists, for sure. We're not talking randomized info about where you live and when you use the product. We should be so lucky. Check these out:
More bad news: Sonos, Eufy and Bose used to be on Mozilla's nice list. Not anymore. And Amazon, Samsung and Microsoft Xbox have gone from bad to worse. Let's take a closer look. The naughty list is longSmart home: Every Google product, including its Nest line, now has a privacy warning. Wyze's security breaches that could let strangers peek into your home make it another company to be wary of. Amazon's Ring is still cozy with law enforcement and hasn't fixed some security gaps. Entertainment: Tile trackers made Mozilla's naughty list after its parent company, Life360, faced a lawsuit for selling location data without permission. Samsung not only has an almost impossible-to-read privacy policy, but it collects a ton of data — and accidentally fed sensitive info to ChatGPT this year. Oops. Health and fitness: Fitbit now requires a Google account. It promises to keep health data separate from your Google account, but I'm not sure I buy that. The AngelSense GPS Watch for kids is at the top of the "creepy" rankings. Not all is gloomy in tech land!Mozilla's "nice" list, aka tech that respects your privacy, hasn't been released yet, but I got a sneak peek.
🛑 Buying tech for your favorite people this year? Scan the full list to make sure you’re not sending a spy into their homes. Reminds me … Why did the spy cross the road? Because he was never on your side. (Ha!) |
Don't get cartridged!I have to tell you about my favorite printer — and good timing because I just got another email from someone annoyed when their ink ran out right when they needed it. Expensive ink cartridges always run out when you're in the middle of printing something important. The Epson EcoTank has big bottles of ink and easy-to-refill tanks. Seriously, it comes with a ridiculous amount of ink. Stop rationing the ink in your printer, and print all you want! I've heard from so many listeners and readers over the years who love their EcoTanks. If you're ready for a printer upgrade, trust me, it's worth it. → |
WEB WATERCOOLER🍏 Green with envy: Goodbye, “green bubble shame.” Starting next year, Apple says iPhones will support RCS, the text standard used by most Android phones. That means, yep, if you’re on Team Android and text someone on Team Apple, your messages will be blue, too. The catch: RCS messages aren’t end-to-end encrypted. There’s always something. Amazon scam alert: Now that shopping season is in full force, watch out for urgent Amazon account suspension threats and Prime membership scams via call, email or text. Stick to the official Amazon website or app for updates on your orders or account. Email and texts are just too phishy. 🚫 ChatGPT Plus on eBay: OpenAI’s sign-ups are paused due to high demand, and some people are selling ChatGPT Plus subscriptions on eBay. Yeah, there are fakes. Skip it and wait for official access instead. Windows, everywhere: Microsoft’s new Windows App turns iPhones, iPads, Macs and PCs into Windows wannabes. You can stream Windows 365, tweak your displays and connect peripherals remotely. Right now, it's in VIP access for business accounts and testing for home users. Never thought I’d see this happen. “Beat It”: A North Carolina man thought he struck gold selling Michael Jackson's autograph for $795. Then, his moonwalk turned into a legal tightrope. The 75-year-old former U.S. Customs employee may face up to $100,000 in fines and a year in prison for illegally selling an official customs declaration. Yes, he took it from work. Sugar saga: Remember when social media was packed with people saying, "Hey, soda's not so bad for you!" The FTC says influencers hired by Coke- and Pepsi-backed groups were mighty tricky about promoting sugary products. Some posts had no disclosures, and others buried them in text. The FTC warns to disclose or face up to $50,120 per violation. Lesson learned: Don't sugarcoat the truth. ¡Ay, car-amba! Amazon will start selling cars next year. You can add a vehicle to your cart, pay for it, and pick it up at a nearby dealership or have it delivered to your home. Oh, the porch pirates are going to have a field day! |
DEVICE ADVICEBye-bye, nosey appsJust because you stopped using an app doesn’t mean it isn’t working in the background. Like a bad ex, an app you’ve forgotten about can still access your contacts. Unlike that ex, revoking third-party app permissions you granted to your Google account is easy. Here’s how:
👀 This does not delete your account with that app. It may request access to your Google account again the next time you open it, so be on the lookout. The more you know. |
🎙️ Your 2-minute tech genius boostWhile you're brushing your teeth, waiting for your toast or sipping your first coffee of the day, I deliver the top tech news story and a digital life hack, all within two minutes. No rambling, no fluff — just straight-to-the-point tech talk. |
TECH LIFE UPGRADESHola, me llamo Kim: Microsoft is testing a language translation tool for videos. Edge users noticed a new “Translate” button when hovering their mouse over a video. This could finally give me a reason to try Microsoft Edge instead of other browsers. I’ve always wanted to watch a telenovela. 🗃️ A safe way to back up what matters: Don’t throw your financial records, medical files and everything else private in Google or Apple’s cloud storage. IDrive* is encrypted, secure and you can access all your files anywhere, any time, from any device. Love that. Try IDrive and use code KIM to get 90% off the first year. Amazon pro tip: Next time you need to return an Amazon order, think twice about where you take it. If you go to a UPS Store when Whole Foods, Kohl’s or Amazon Fresh is the same distance or closer, you’ll have to pay a $1 fee. 💰 Financial encourage-mint: I’ve gotten a bunch of comments and emails since I told you Mint is shutting down. In case you missed it, here are some options for a budget tool replacement. It’s your Australian mate: You can change your smart assistant’s voice if its dulcet tones get on your nerves. On iPhone: Go to Settings > Siri & Search > Siri Voice. For Android: On most phones that use Google Assistant, say, "Hey Google, open Assistant settings." Go to All settings > Assistant voice and choose one. |
DEAL OF THE DAY
|
BY THE NUMBERS3.5 Minutes of daily exercise that could lower the risk of heart attack and stroke. The catch: It must be vigorous (aka blood-pumping) exercise. Researchers say you need 150 minutes a week if you want to take it slow. If you’re not getting any exercise, start today. You can do this! 14% American adults who regularly get news from TokTok. In 2020, it was just 3%. It’s most popular with folks ages 18 to 29 — about one-third of those use the video site for news. Yikes, people. 28.9 terabytes Data usage in one day of Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour — on just one network. AT&T says Swifties used nearly 30 TB of data in Arlington, Texas. Let’s put that into perspective. One terabyte represents 200,000 photos or 400 hours of video moving across the network. That’s no bad blood. |
WHAT THE TECH?I’m waiting for the tuba toothpaste. |
UNTIL NEXT TIME ...The answer: B.) 500. Yep, 500 hours of video content is uploaded to YouTube every minute. Here’s something else I thought you might find interesting. YouTube’s most popular content is music videos (No. 1), followed by how-tos and tutorials and gaming. Speaking of … YouTube recommended a video of a former vice president playing bass. I think something was wrong with its Al‑Gore‑rhythm. (Oh, was that a groan I heard from you?) 🖨️ Glad you’re here. If you never want to buy an overpriced ink cartridge again, be sure to check out Epson EcoTank. You’ll be happy you did. Thank you for letting me in your inbox. I’ll see you tomorrow with the best newsletter in the USA! — Kim |
