“Mom, I’m scared.” That’s the text message Alexis Lose of Ashtabula County received late last month when she was waiting for her son’s airplane to arrive in Cleveland from Tampa, Florida, for a holiday visit. Her 16-year-old son, Logan, was flying alone and was mistakenly put on a plane going to San Juan, Puerto Rico. Logan, traveling without an adult for the first time, didn’t realize he was on the wrong airplane until he heard an overhead announcement that the Frontier Airlines plane was preparing to land in Puerto Rico. Airports are a hectic and overwhelming place, especially for a teenager. I remember the thrill of flying from Arizona to Orlando, Fla., as a high school senior to visit a friend and in the rush of landing and getting my bag, I somehow lost my paper ticket for my flight back home. Yes, it was a paper ticket and in those days, so when lost, it’s gone forever — with no record of purchase or reissue option. Elation turned to fear when I called my mom and dad and learned they had to buy a new one-way ticket. I’m sure they made me do extra chores for months after that spring break trip. Elliot Forhan: Cleveland prosecutors aren’t charging a local state lawmaker after he was accused by a fellow Democrat of breaking a court order by visiting their home. Lake County: A new set of data released by the Census Bureau last month offers updates of details on a variety of topics for every place in the United States, including all of Northeast Ohio. Truck spill: A truck hauling hazardous waste collected from the site of last year’s train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio, crashed early Tuesday morning in Geauga County, spilling a small amount of the material, Cliff Pinckard reports. Homicides: Cleveland police are investigating the first two slayings of 2024, Olivia Mitchell reports. The first happened Monday around 5:30 p.m. at the Mohican ball fields when a 23-year-old man was shot multiple times. At 4:16 a.m. Tuesday, a 17-year-old was shot and killed in the Slavic Village neighborhood. Fatal shooting: Police are searching for a suspect who they say killed a 15-year-old girl in Cleveland Heights on Monday, Olivia Mitchell reports. Narayia Thomas died of a gunshot wound to the head, police say. Officer death: Cleveland police officials are mourning the passing of a patrolman who died Monday while on duty, Olivia Mitchell reports. Victor Claudio, 53, served with Cleveland’s Fifth District for 23 years. Taco Bell shooting: A man has been hospitalized after a Taco Bell employee shot him Monday during a robbery in Akron, Olivia Mitchell reports. Prison guard: A former state prison guard who made about $10,000 smuggling crystal methamphetamine and other drugs for inmates was sentenced Tuesday to four years in federal prison, Adam Ferrise reports. |
