Access to water, power and internet are human rights. Urge Congress to #CancelUtilityDebt.

Friend,

People across the country are being crushed by a tidal wave of utility debt. That weight — which totals in the billions of dollars nationally — is decades in the making and has only been worsened by the economic and health emergency caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

As vaccination rates go up nationally, people are seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. Yet with government supports put in place during the pandemic expiring, it's critical that we work together to ensure that people are able to access water, power and internet free from the tremendous burden of utility debt.

That’s why we’re joining hundreds of our allies across the country today in calling on Congress to ensure that people can access these vital services.

Urge your members of Congress to use the infrastructure package to #CancelUtilityDebt.

Access to water, power and internet are human rights — but they’re not free and in some cases are incredibly expensive. And when it comes to internet, we know that decades of discrimination, abusive credit-check systems and sky-high prices have meant that Black and Brown communities are disproportionately disconnected.

As we’ve seen over and over again during the COVID-19 pandemic, that can have deadly consequences.

No one should ever have to decide between paying their utility bills and paying for other essentials. Tell your members of Congress to make canceling utility debt a priority.

Thanks for all you do,
