This is a bullish narrative

Good morning Voornaam,

With the final episode of The Trader's Handbook coming your way tomorrow, it really has been a fantastic journey with IG Markets South Africa in Ghost Mail this year. I hope you've gotten plenty of value from it. The learning opportunities don't stop, like in this excellent piece on swing trading.

Another great learning opportunity is Unlock the Stock, featuring KAL Group in the final session for the year. This is so much more than just an agri play, with a growing focus on specialist retail and the fuel business. Get to know KAL Group with the recording of the management presentation and Q&A available here>>>

In company news, Thungela was the highlight for me yesterday. It's so good to finally see a more bullish narrative around Transnet, which really has been the Achilles' heel of our coal industry. Although coal prices are down year-on-year, production guidance is strong at Thungela and any uptick in China in 2025 should do wonders for pricing. Keep an eye on this one.

Nedbank gave us an important pre-close update, with the bank continuing to grow earnings well ahead of inflation. There are some helpful nuggets in here around demand for credit, so don't miss it.

Other news came in from African Rainbow Capital (including a note on home loan demand at ooba), along with Boxer, Renergen, Sabvest and South32. Labat Africa is catching up on its financial reporting and they lost a fortune in 2023, so we will have to wait and see if 2024 was any better.

Get all the details on these stories and the various Nibbles (including the all-important director dealings) in Ghost Bites here>>>

International Business Snippet:

The headlines around the automotive industry continue to paint a bleak picture for the Europeans. A manufacturer lobby group is trying to get compliance costs lower, with one of the suggested ways being a watering down of carbon regulations. Although regulation is part of what got Europe into this mess in the first place, I don't think reduced regulations will magically make the cars more competitive against Chinese alternatives. That ship has sailed and the European manufacturers are going to need to make really tough choices on costs and pricing in the market.

In tech, Alphabet's shares rallied after the unveiling of Willow, its latest quantum computing chip. If you're curious about quantum computing, we covered the topic quite recently in Magic Markets in Episode 190, featuring global geopolitical expert Dimitri Zabelin.

IG Markets Morning Call: daily macroeconomic update

US and European index futures are pointing to a marginally lower start to the day ahead of inflation data out of the US this afternoon. Asian benchmarks have started to pare recent gains, which were fueled by China’s pledge to further stimulate their economy. We are in turn expecting a softer open for the JSE All-Share Index today as well.

The dollar has gained along with US Treasury Yields. The rand is slightly softer on the day.

Gold has started to erase the previous days gains, leading precious metals lower in an inverse correlation to a strengthening dollar. Base metals are trading mixed on the day.

Oil prices have continued to rebound on escalating tensions in the Middle East, demand side assumptions from China as well as recent news that OPEC+ would maintain output curbs for a further three months.

Traders will want to keep an eye out for local CPI inflation data this morning and US CPI inflation data out this afternoon.
