Leadership Insights

Do physicians still want to be medical staff leaders?

Recent stories and studies point to the fact that new/younger physicians are looking for a work-life balance and have less interest in taking on additional responsibilities that will take away from their personal time. Is this trend making its way to seasoned physicians as well? In an article for Physician's Money Digest, blogger Physician On FIRE, discusses the top 5 reasons to become a locum tenens. One of the reasons he states is to be free of medical staff leadership positions.

“The best avenue for relief for these doctors, and the only way to invalidate the CMS regulation, is to go the federal courts."

-Alison Grippo, an attorney for Bass Berry & Sims in Nashville discusses why a group of physicians in Tennessee are suing CMS.

The Guide to Medical Staff Bylaws

Bylaws serve as the governing documents of the medical staff. Bylaws must meet the hospital’s accreditor’s standards, state and federal regulations, and the needs of the hospital’s medical staff. The Guide to Medical Staff Bylaws offers tips for writing bylaws and actual sample language that complies with Joint Commission, DNV, HFAP, and/or CMS standards. Mary J. Hoppa, MD, MBA, offers guidance on implementing accreditor’s standards and advice on getting physicians to buy into the importance of following medical staff bylaws. This guide goes beyond just providing sample language; it explains the importance of the bylaw and what it means for your organization to ensure compliance.
