The other day I talked about the #1 trap I see people fall into when it comes to discipline…
And the importance of focusing on Results over Activity.
In a nutshell, you want to make sure whatever “discipline building” you’re doing is actually moving you closer to your goals.
Not getting in the way.
(HINT: If you’re not a fitness model or competitive athlete but you work out 10.5 hours every week… you’re almost definitely sacrificing success in other areas)
Of course, this flies in the face of what you see on Instagram and TikTok…
Where all the icebaths, hardcore challenges, and Navy SEAL personalities seem to promote discipline just for discipline’s sake.
It’s no wonder people have trouble telling the difference between grueling tests of mental and physical strength…
Versus being TRULY disciplined and making consistent progress on your important goals.
So how disciplined are YOU?
Maybe you’re doing better — OR worse — than you thought…
How can you really know?
That’s why I wanted to offer you this discipline scorecard…
With 3 questions to rate your own discipline! 1. Am I doing things every day that DIRECTLY serve my goals? (YES = 10 points)
Whether you’re writing a book or training for a Crossfit competition…
Directly serving your goals doesn’t mean meditating to get “in the zone”.
And it doesn’t mean buying special equipment to help you perform.
What it DOES mean is sitting down at your desk every day at a scheduled time and writing something (anything)...
Or sticking to your training regimen and consistently stepping up to that squat rack or chin-up bar — whether you feel like it or not. 2. Am I doing things that make me “busier” yet DON’T directly serve my goals? (YES = Minus 5 points)
So you’re an ambitious person and you want to do… well, pretty much everything.
I can relate.
Listen, we all need room in our lives for adventure, relationships, hobbies, and entertainment.
That’s what makes life worth living.
The part you need to beware of is adding extra activities, for no other reason than a vague hope they will help you reach your goals.
I’ve mentioned ex-Navy SEAL David Goggins before…
… who can often be found running through the desert at 120 degrees.
Since he’s a competitive ultramarathoner, that’s a great use of time for Goggins — but probably not so much for you.
You don’t need to spend hours pushing your body and mind to their limit just to improve productivity…
There’s much simpler ways of programming yourself to get work done.
Rule of thumb:
If it doesn’t enhance your quality of life or directly serve your goals… get rid of it! 3. Am I doing things that directly INHIBIT my goals? (YES = Minus 5 points)
This is the high performer’s most lethal “Success Killer”.
Are you busting your tail all week to set sales meetings with prospective clients…
… Then delivering weak, low-energy pitches because you stayed up til 1AM binge-watching Netflix the night before?
Are you exercising and prepping meals so you can look good at the beach on your long awaited vacay…
… Then sneaking chips and chocolates that go straight to your belly or hips?
If you’re shooting yourself in the foot like this — you’re not just ruining your progress…
You’re wasting all the time you spent getting to that point in the first place.

Did you score 10 points? …5? …Or net 0?
If it’s 10, congrats! You’re a rare breed and I'm sure you've already had plenty of success.
5 points is pretty common. You’re making progress but probably frustrated with the slow pace.
0 means you’ve got your work cut out. But the good news is, there’s HUGE potential for you.
The bottom line is it’s ok if you fall off track sometimes, we ALL do.
What’s not ok is allowing it to continue…
That’s an automatic forfeit from all your big goals and dreams.
Unfortunately, it’s exactly what happens to most people because they don’t even realize there’s a problem.
Now that you know how you’re doing…
