2 firefighters injured, 65 residents displaced in 5-alarm fire at Dallas senior living facility, officials say VIDEO: Two Dallas firefighters have been taken to the hospital and 65 residents have been displaced, as crews battled a five-alarm fire at a senior living facility Thursday evening, officials say. Just after 6:30 p.m., Dallas Fire-Rescue (DFR) crews responded to call for an "automatic fire alarm" at the Serenity Apartments in the 3300 block of Dilido Road on the city's northeast side. When crews arrived, firefighters saw smoke coming from the second floor of the three-story building and then immediately upgraded the response to a working second-alarm fire. A short time later, the blaze was again upgraded to a four-alarm fire, which means about 100 firefighters have been dispatched to the scene. By 8:20 p.m. the fire was upgraded to a fifth alarm, in which approximately 120 firefighters were dispatched to the scene. WFAA-TV ABC 8 DALLAS Weather makes hot spots, flare ups a constant problem as crews battle Crittenberg Complex Fire at Fort Hood The Crittenberg Complex Fire is technically 95 percent contained on post but the prevailing weather conditions are making hot spots and flares ups a constant problem for firefighters. Low humidity and winds of more than 30 miles per hour are the perfect combination for turning smoldering embers into dangerous fires. Thursday afternoon, a range control officer reported a brush fire near the OTR range on the north east part of the post. Multiple Fort Hood crews were immediately called in to attack the fire. "This is what we're dealing with now at Fort Hood. These hot spots will continue to be a problem until we get a lot of rain," said Fort Hood Fire Chief Andrew Lima. At the same time the OTR fire flared, another small fire sparked several miles to the south. KWTX-TV CBS 10 WACO First to arrive, last to leave: Sherwood Shores Volunteer Fire Department stuck with its community after the tornado With trucks loaded and gear packed, the Sherwood Shores Volunteer Department was among the first to show up for their community. "The day of the tornado, I believe we left around 2 or 3 am," said Captain Craig Reed. "Total chaos is what it was. We couldn't get anywhere. We had power lines down on every street we turned on." Now, they're among the final crews left. "I was back for the next 12 days straight," said Reed. "Ya'll need water or anything?" said Fire Chief Tim Bilderback to a resident. "We got some cases. You okay?" Since Sherwood Shores is an unincorporated area of Grayson County, the department is working with twelve men, and a budget they said is the bare minimum- about 40,000 dollars for a whole year of work. VIDEOS: Massive fire in Washington State that lasted for hours causes $10 million in damage Multiple fire departments and agencies battled a large commercial fire in downtown Friday Harbor on San Juan Island that lasted for hours and caused millions of dollars in damage. The fire in the area of Front and Spring streets was called in by a tow truck driver at 3:43 a.m. Thursday. Multiple buildings were involved, according to Kimberley M. Kimple with San Juan County Fire Protection District #2. Washington State ferries were used to transport firefighters and equipment from Orcas and Lopez islands to San Juan Island. Sheriff's office boats were also used to move fire crews, and staff from Washington State Ferries were kept on the island to help deputies provide crowd control at the fire scene. The fire caused inter-island ferries to be delayed. KIRO-TV CBS 7 SEATTLE Related: Huge fire that gutted building in Friday Harbor under investigation Kentucky fire department looking at easing firefighter qualifications to encourage more recruits Worker shortages have been affecting many industries across the country recently. Some who are also feeling the effects are first responders. Officials from fire departments across Kentuckiana said it's been hard to close the gaps they desperately need filled. When it comes to hiring new recruits, multiple fire chiefs said that with all of the qualifications that are actually needed, sometimes it feels impossible to bring on a new group of firefighters. "Our problem here is that we are a smaller department. We compete with much larger departments on trying to get personnel in," said Jon Layne Troutman, Fire Chief for the Shepherdsville Fire Department. That's the problem that officials with both career and volunteer fire departments said they're facing. With a shortage of workers across many industries, they said it's hard to get people into the roles they need filled. WHAS-TV ABC 11 LOUISVILLE Wisconsin: Manitowoc fire in 1962 was so bright people in Michigan saw light coming from the city PHOTOS: Where were you on the night of March 25, 1962? If you were in the city of Manitowoc on that cold spring morning, you most likely remember what Fire Chief James Danielson called "The biggest and most spectacular fire ever in Manitowoc." It was just around midnight when a fireman looked out a window of the old Franklin Street station and saw flames coming from Elevator B, formerly owned by the Northern Grain Company, which was four blocks away. The elevator was built in 1899 when Manitowoc was a major shipping port for grain. The Northern Grain Company built large elevators west of the Main Street Bridge on the Manitowoc River. Elevator B was across the river along South Water Street, between 12th and 13th streets. It had a capacity of 800,000 bushels. An annex, capable of storing 1 million bushels, was added in 1900. HERALD TIMES REPORTER - METERED SITE Colorado firefighter sets Guinness World Record Being a firefighter requires a certain amount of mental and physical strength. Let's face it: They don't put these guys and gals on calendars for no reason. But it's a part of the job Hygiene firefighter Dylan Miraglia takes more seriously than some. "It's a physical job, it's a blue-collar job," Miraglia said. Miraglia said he's always dreamed of setting a world weightlifting record and stumbled upon a challenge while flipping through the Guinness Book of World Records."You have to be strong, and that's one of the aspects of the job." When Miraglia's not working, you can usually find him working out in a small gym tucked behind the rural Boulder County fire station. "I've been weightlifting my whole life, and there's not a day where I'm going to take off and relax, it's just a part of me," he said. KDVR-TV FOX 31 DENVER PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
