Texas A&M Forest Service distributes more than $1M to rural fire departments The Texas A&M Forest Service has distributed $1.3 million in grants to rural fire departments in the state this month. Seven departments in the panhandle received money. Booker, Dawn, Kress, Lake Tanglewood and Lazbuddie each received $20,000. Boys Ranch and Perryton both got $10,000. In total, the Texas legislature has allocated about $22 million to the Forest Service for the Fiscal Year 2024 to award through the Rural Volunteer Fire Department Assistance Program. The money will help departments buy fire and rescue equipment, personal protective gear and training aids. Another round of funding distribution is tentatively scheduled for August. The Rural VFD Assistance Program was established in 2001 and has awarded more than $350 million to VFDs in Texas. It happened a little after 10:30 p.m. when the Houston Fire Department was called to a motor vehicle accident on S Gessner near Westpark Tollway. It's unclear what exactly caused the crash, but officers with the Houston Police Department said it appears the private ambulance was headed southbound on Gessner when it changed lanes and hit a restaurant's exterior before flipping. Responding crews came across the ambulance landed on its side and saw the two medics operating the ambulance were trapped inside the cab. Firefighters were able to extricate the medics in about 20 minutes from the ambulance. KPRC-TV NBC 2 HOUSTON College Station Fire Department 'Push In' Ceremony Officially Places A New Fire Engine Into Service PHOTO: For the first time since 2018, the College Station fire department places a new engine into service. A traditional "push-in" ceremony took place Thursday afternoon (April 11) at CSFD station six at University and Tarrow. Fire Chief Richard Mann said the replacement process started in the summer of 2021 to replace a 2004 model. The new engine is expected to serve the next 15 years and respond to an estimated 25,000 calls. The $1.2 million dollar engine will serve as the lead vehicle to respond to hazardous materials incidents in the seven county region. The engine, which weighs a little over 60,000 pounds, carries a 750 gallon water tank and a 1,500 gallon per minute pump that is capable of delivering water or firefighting foam. The chief invited residents to fire station six to check out the new engine. WTAW-AM 1620 COLLEGE STATION Mission firefighters now responding to all medical calls in the city VIDEO: The city of Mission is officially combining fire and ambulance services within the city's fire department. Now, Mission firefighters who are trained as paramedics will respond to any type of medical calls and provide treatment. It's a partnership that's been in the works since 2019, city officials said. Three ambulances are in service, and a fourth is getting its finishing touches. The ambulances are fully equipped with everything firefighters need to provide the best care when responding to a call. "Our paramedics are trained to a level where they can provide medications for cardiac arrest, they can treat patients that are suffering stroke, they can take care of any type of major trauma," Mission Fire Chief Adrian Garcia said. "The most important thing, of course, [is being] able to quickly transport to definitive care to any of the local hospitals here within the Valley." KRGV-TV ABC 5 WESLCAO PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

One Colorado fire department has responded to a fire every 12 hours since April 1 VIDEO: The Colorado Springs Fire Department (CSFD) has responded to a significant fire every 12 hours since April 1, according to a new video posted by Ashley Franco, the Public Information Officer for CSFD. The video was posted to social media on Thursday, April 11 along with a warning from CSFD to homeowners to check around their homes for any fire hazards and to always have working smoke alarms. The fires CSFD has responded to include structure, grass, and vehicle fires. "The CSFD has responded to a significant fire every 12 hours since April 1 with the majority of those fires being structure fires," said Franco. Some common causes CSFD has seen from those fires, according to Franco are unattended cooking, careless smoking, and unattended candles. Rehab 12 has several features to help protect firefighters, including a handwashing station. Battalion Chief Keith Wilder said it is ready to use as soon as an emergency arises. Specifically, Wilder said the Rehab 12 would roll out for fires at the two-alarm or greater level, or at the request of the division chief. "I'm so happy to see that vehicle because someone is here to take care of me," Wilder said. The truck cost the city about $260,000. Cancer-causing carcinogens are the No. 1 killers of firefighters. Raleigh Fire Chief Herbert Griffin pushed for the Raleigh Fire Department to get Rehab 12 after having a similar truck during the 13 years he spent with the Houston Fire Department. WRAL-TV NBC 5 RALEIGH FDNY required to give EMTs bulletproof vests under bill approved by New York City Council VIDEO: New York City Council approved a bill Thursday requiring the FDNY to give bulletproof vests to EMTs. Supporters say it's necessary as threats against first responders intensify. Natasha Nembhard joined the FDNY first as an EMT and now as a paramedic in Brooklyn because she loves to help people. "I wanted to take care of people. I didn't know that I was gonna be a victim," she said. She says over the years, 911 calls have become more dangerous. On one recent call, she responded for a man who was passed out on the street. "He woke up when we got there... He got really aggressive really fast and the next thing you know, he pulled out a knife," she said. Thankfully, Nembhard was OK. But it was just last year when EMT Julia Fatum was stabbed on the job by a patient in Manhattan.
