Unique facility in College Station prepares first responders for major catastrophes Simulated train derailments, earthquakes and other emergencies can all be found in a 52-acre complex known as Disaster City in College Station, Texas, where elite rescue teams learn to save lives. "There's no replication of this kind of thing," Stephen Bjune, Texas Task Force 1 training manager, told CBS News. "There's smaller sites that have little bits of this, but nothing to my knowledge in the United States, or even the world, has this much disaster on this kind of scale." Texas Task Force 1 is one of 28 nationwide rapid-response Federal Emergency Management Agency search and rescue squads, and it uses Disaster City as its training ground. Disaster City has more than a dozen disaster scenarios, each based on a real-life catastrophe, including a flattened parking garage modeled after the one underneath the World Trade Center. CBS NEWS Proposed bill would increase pension payout for Dallas first responders who die in the line of duty The Dallas Police and Fire Pension System may be the only one in the state that doesn't provide full pension benefits to survivors of those who die in the line of duty. That may change this legislative session through a bill filed by Dallas Democrat Julie Johnson. If it becomes law, it would increase the pension benefits to survivors of Dallas police officers and firefighters who die in the line of duty. For Dallas PD officers and firefighters who die in the line of duty, the current pension design considers that person as having retired early, meaning their family members get reduced benefits. "So what happens is I get the reduced amount, as if he retired at 49, and then I had minor children at the time of death. When my youngest turned 19 last year, half of that money went away," Kristi Walters explained. Walters' Dallas firefighter husband, Dave, died in the line of duty. KDFW-TV FOX 4 DALLAS Wichita Falls restaurant sustains substantial damage from 3-alarm fire A three-alarm fire early Wednesday morning, April 12, 2023, caused hundreds of thousands of dollars in damages to a beloved Wichita Falls restaurant already closed due to a fire just over one month prior. According to Jody Ashlock, Assistant Fire Marshal with the Wichita Falls Fire Department, firefighters were dispatched to the China Star buffet, located in the 1000 block of Central Freeway at around 12:21 a.m. on Wednesday morning. Ashlock said upon arrival at the scene, the Battalion Chief stated the fire was showing from the rear of the structure and quickly instructed dispatch to activate a signal 103, elevating the fire to a three-alarm fire and requesting additional manpower and equipment to battle the blaze. According to Ashlock, firefighters began to fight the fire after entering the building through a door that was found to be open. KFDX-TV NBC 3 WICHITA FALLS Taylor County: View Volunteer Fire Department finally finishes new station The View Volunteer Fire Department has seen some big changes over the past year, after battling the Mesquite Heat wildfire that scorched nearly 11,000 acres, they officially have a new station to call home. View FD Chief Ricky Bishop explained the impact the station will have for the entire community, "We were in a building that was originally built in 1979. You can see around that it was a small building. We couldn't stand between the trucks like we are right now to be able to talk without touching both trucks. All of our equipment was just everywhere, in storage, and so this has given us a lot more room where we can grow." The new station doesn't only include a new garage, it has a kitchen, meeting space, several offices and storage room for the station's gear. KTXS-TV ABC/CW+ 12 SWEETWATER PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

VIDEO: Massive fire destroys barn in Illinois; no injuries reported A massive fire destroyed a barn in far west suburban Sugar Grove Thursday. Firefighters from Elburn and Countryside assisted in containing the fire in the barn at 3-S-598 Bliss Rd. The fire was in a rural area with no fire hydrants, requiring tanks of water to be shuttled in. The barn was destroyed in the fire. The blaze spread to another structure that sustained minimal damage. Officials say the cause was outside burning on a red flag warning day - which means a combination of warm temperatures and winds caused the rapid spread of the fire. No one was hurt. WBBM-TV CBS 2 CHICAGO Fire & EMS team in Kentucky uses new device that treats patients, addresses opioid epidemic VIDEO: The Anchorage Middletown Fire & EMS team has a new way of treating patients dealing with pain, that's also addressing the state's opioid epidemic. It's called the Nitronox and it's inside every AMFEMS ambulance. It's a portable machine that uses a mix of oxygen and nitrous oxide to treat patients for pain while they're on a scene or in the back of an ambulance headed toward the hospital. While it's small enough to fit in a lunch box, it's powerful enough to be a game changer. "I definitely think this is the future," said Capt. Alex Russell, AMFEMS. "If we have a patient who is in pain, and we need a quick relief, we can set this up within a minute. We had a patient that had fallen down on the ground, with a possible leg fracture. She wasn't able to move, and we were able to immediately grab this, and start administering nitrous. She had immediate relief." WLKY-TV CBS 32 LOUISVILLE Fire truck pulled from sinkhole in California; no injuries reported VIDEO: A team effort was underway in Escondido to rescue one of their trucks from an "active sinkhole" that formed beneath the truck Thursday evening. Escondido police said they heard the radio call for assistance around 4:40 p.m. from a firefighter who said their engine had partially succumbed to a sinkhole in a church parking lot in the 1000 block of West Country Club Lane. Video from Chopper 8 showed the front driver's side tires sank about halfway into the asphalt. Escondido Fire Department said that personnel aboard the fire engine were previously responding to a medical call in the area when the fire truck became stuck. By 5:30 p.m., a tow truck had arrived on the scene to assist in pulling the heavy engine from the rubble of the asphalt. No injuries were reported. KFMB-TV CBS 8 SAN DIEGO Vermont student earns Guinness world record for running in firefighting gear VIDEO: Like many kids, current Middlebury senior Emily Jones was fascinated by the Guinness Book of World Records as a child. "I thought it was cool and wanted to have a record," said Jones. While sifting through an extensive list of records months ago, Jones found a section of categories all having something to do with firefighting. As a volunteer firefighter at the Middlebury fire department, Jones felt she found the record she could tackle. "People thought I was crazy," said Jones. "Myself included." On Saturday, Jones crushed the Guinness world record for the fastest mile time by a woman in full firefighting gear by over two and a half minutes. The previous record of 11 minutes is no more, after Jones' 8 minutes and 25 seconds time. WPTZ-TV NBC 5 PLATTSBURGH Annual Firefighters Day at Missouri Capitol impacts the next generation of first responders VIDEO: Firefighters and high schoolers from around the state gathered Wednesday at the Missouri Capitol for Firefighters Day. This annual event honors both current and past firefighters while encouraging the future to fight on. Hundreds of firefighters filled the Capitol rotunda with joy. Even though the majority of the room was filled with official firefighters, the real stars were the students admiring their work. Lt. Gov. Mike Kehoe kicked off the event with a speech recognizing the high school students in Missouri Career and Technology Centers already training to become first responders. Missouri State Fire Marshal Tim Bean has relentlessly pushed to promote high school first responder programs due to the decrease of employees in emergency services.
