KAUZ-TV CBS/CW+ 6 WICHITA FALLS Massive damage to San Antonio daycare center following 2-alarm fire VIDEO: A massive 2-alarm fire did extensive damage to a South Side daycare center. The fire started around 5 a.m. Friday at a daycare center off Pleasanton Road near E. Southcross Boulevard. The San Antonio Fire Department dispatched 31 units to battle the fire. Fire Department spokesperson Joe Arrington said that they saw heavy flames coming from the building when they arrived on scene. They believe the fire started near a playground in the courtyard of the daycare center and it quickly spread throughout the building. Due to the massive flames and the size of the building, they called out a second alarm and attacked the fire using ladder trucks and firefighters on the ground, using hoses through windows. At some point, the roof of the building partially collapsed. Officials said crews were called to the fire at about noon after multiple callers reported heavy black smoke coming from the hotel's roof at 3100 W. I-40. The first arriving unit found heavy fire coming from a fourth-floor window in the atrium area on the backside of the 10-story building. Crews entered the building a set up a blitz-fire (a large caliber hose capable of flowing 500 gallons per minute) to knock down the atrium area fire. Firefighters went upstairs, performed search and rescue operations room by room, and checked for extension. The fire was mostly contained to one hotel room and extended to the exterior wall where it was extinguished from an aerial ladder. KVII-TV ABC/CW+ 7 AMARILLO Wichita Falls Fire Department extinguishes house fire The Wichita Falls Fire Department responded to a house fire in the 1300 block of Giddings Street Wednesday night. Firefighters reported light smoke was showing when they first arrived to the scene. Upon entering the home, they reportedly found it was full of smoke and a fire was showing from the top of the wall in the living room area. WFFD officials said firefighters extinguished the fire after about 15 minutes. No injuries were reported, and the Red Cross was called to help the residents. The fire caused about $10,000 in damages to the home and $500 in damages to the contents. An electrical circuit arcing in the attic area was the cause of the fire, according to WFFD officials. CLEVELAND.COM Legislation classifying Illinois dispatchers as first responders clears legislature A bill that would give Illinois emergency dispatchers more benefits and officially classify the profession as first responders could soon be sent to the governor. Senate Bill 3127 was filed by state Sen. Neil Anderson and provides that emergency dispatchers are now COVID-19 first responders. If signed by Gov. J.B. Pritzker, emergency dispatchers would qualify for extra medical benefits, mental health benefits, and extra funding for the industry. Anderson, R-Andalusia, explained during a news conference Wednesday why he thinks this bill was important to pass. "Dispatchers are there to answer the initial call on what 99% of the time is someone's worst day of their entire life," Anderson said. "These men and women deal with critical situations and they are our eyes and ears for police, fire, and E.M.S." THE CENTER SQUARE California: How the San Jose Home Depot fire compares to the 2002 Santana Row blaze PHOTOS: It's not every day that a major building in San Jose becomes consumed by a raging inferno, sending up dark clouds of smoke that can be seen for miles, forcing hundreds of people to flee for safety and captivating the nation's attention. So when a Home Depot store in South San Jose quickly burst aflame last weekend, many residents were reminded of one of the city's last calamitous structure fires: the 2002 Santana Row blaze. While San Jose has experienced a multitude of other massive infernos in the past two decades — including a 2010 blaze that burned most of Merritt Trace Elementary School to the ground and a 2014 five-alarm fire that destroyed a 120,000-square-foot warehouse — Santana Row remains the worst in San Jose history, ingrained in the minds of many residents. In some ways — from the building types to the size and breadth of destruction — the Santana Row and Home Depot fires are quite different. But stories told by residents feature sobering similarities.
