Apartment fire likely caused by lightning strike destroys 12 units near Webster, Houston Fire Department says VIDEO: Approximately 12 units were destroyed when a lightning strike caused a fire at an apartment complex near Webster, according to the Houston Fire Department's deputy chief, Isaac Garcia. The fire was reported around 4 p.m. at an apartment complex located in the 200 block of El Dorado Boulevard. Garcia said they initially received reports of heavy lightning in the area and then neighbors noticed smoke coming from the buildings. The call was upgraded to a two-alarm fire as firefighters performed an offensive attack and battled rain, thunder and lighting, according to the Houston Professional Fire Fighters Association. Although the heavy rain challenged firefighters, they were ultimately able to keep the fire isolated to one building. No injuries were reported. Drivers were asked to avoid the area due to heavy emergency traffic. KPRC-TV NBC 2 HOUSTON Cherokee County: Storm blows roof off Maydelle Volunteer Fire Department VIDEO: The roof of the Maydelle Volunteer Fire Department was blown off in a storm that came through Wednesday evening. According to Fire Chief Jody Gray, he received a call last night and headed out around 5:30 to see the damage. Gray said about 75 percent of the roof was blown off. Metal was all over and tangled in the trees. "It was just a devastating experience, a disaster everywhere. The station was flooded obviously from the roof being blown off. All the equipment inside was okay, trucks were okay. But station was inoperable at that point. Electricity was off, power polls down on the building. It was a pretty nasty event," he said. No injuries were reported and they have since pushed the debris out of the roadway. KLTV ABC 7 TYLER The Houston Fire Department Places Three New Decontamination Task Force Vehicles In Service This acquisition originates from Fire Chief Sam Peña's, health and safety initiative. "The Health and Safety of Houston Firefighters is of utmost importance and has been a strategic focus of our administration for the last five years. Significant investments have been made to provide our personnel with training safety, and cancer prevention equipment. With the purchase of these apparatus, firefighters will have the tools to perform mass decontamination and reduce cancer risk on emergency scenes more efficiently" said Fire Chief Sam Peña. The units will be utilized to transport the existing Decon Task Force trailers, which house all the necessary equipment for an incident involving, mass decontamination or technical decontamination. These units have the same capabilities as current HFD Emergency Support Units (ESU's). HOUSTON STYLE MAGAZINE Despite recent rain, fire danger persists, says Montgomery County fire marshal Don't let a couple of rainy days fool you. The Montgomery County Fire Marshal's Office said it's not enough moisture to end the area's fire danger brought on by an extended drought this summer. They estimated that 6 to 7 inches of rain is necessary to bring dried out soils to full saturation, and it's unlikely the current weather pattern will provide it. Recent storms may have brought needed rain, but they've also caused destructive fires. The Montgomery Fire Department determined that lightning strikes from storms last week started small fires that smoldered for several days. They broke out into larger fires over the weekend once the rain stopped and the area dried out again. Twenty-seven acres of land burned near Giles Road off of FM 1486, and an unknown number of vehicles were damaged. KIAH-TV CW 39 HOUSTON Railroad company donates $4,000 to Borger Fire Department A railroad company donated $4,000 to the Borger Fire Department. KFDA-TV CBS 10 AMARILLO Unchanged by time, the Dallas Firefighter Museum turns 50 VIDEO: When the State Fair of Texas kicked off in the fall of 1972, there was a new attraction in an old building that sat just across the street from Fair Park. The Dallas Firefighter Museum opened that year in an old firehouse built in 1908. Now 50 years later, the museum is set to celebrate some big milestones while remaining nearly untouched by time. A 1972 WFAA story on the opening of the Dallas Firefighter Museum is preserved at the SMU Jones Film Library and if you walk through the museum today, it will look strikingly similar to how it looked in the old film. "A lot of things have not changed in the museum," said museum president and former Dallas Fire Battalion Chief Trixie Lohrke. "We still have a lot of the same artifacts." VIDEO: Crews battle massive warehouse fire in Massachusetts The state fire marshal is investigating a raging fire that tore through a warehouse in Dudley, Massachusetts, Thursday night. Massive flames ripped through the warehouse on Roberts Road at 11:30 p.m. Firefighters who have been on the scene for hours were ordered out of the building due to extreme, hazardous conditions. Officials said the building contained industrial materials. A state hazmat team responded to monitor the air quality. State Police fire investigators assigned to the State Fire Marshal's office are working with local officials in an effort to determine the origin and cause of the fire. No injuries were reported. WCVB-TV ABC 5 BOSTON San Francisco firefighters credit mobile technology in park rescue VIDEO: Firefighters in San Francisco are crediting mobile technology for a rescue. It's a piece of technology that most people walk around with every day, and now first responders are using it to lead them to people who need help. Fort Funston in San Francisco is a beautiful place to hike, but after dark, it can get disorienting. That's apparently what happened to a woman Wednesday night. San Francisco fire crews said the woman called a non-emergency number saying she was lost. Dispatchers were able to use a system called Rapid SOS, which pinged her phone, and led rescuers right to her location. She was found cold, but otherwise OK. Battalion Chief Glenn Kircher says it appears everything worked exactly the way it should have. "This is where technology works in our favor, and it worked perfectly," said Kircher. KTVU-TV FOX 2 OAKLAND School's unique safety features inspiring other Minnesota schools to craft better emergency plans VIDEO: A charter school in St. Paul attracts students with unique needs from around Minnesota and across the country. And the building's safety plan is so successful, the state hopes other schools will follow suit. Every inch of Metro Deaf School was carefully thought out. "We had a deaf architect working alongside hearing architects," said Melissa Sweetmilk, the school's principal. "There's no other school like Metro Deaf School." Years ago, when the school moved locations, administrators had the opportunity to design the building of their dreams, and they added more safety features. The attention to detail extended to the school's safety plan. "There is always that thought in the back of our heads: What if someone does enter the school wanting to hurt people," Sweetmilk said. WCCO-TV CBS 4 MINNEAPOLIS Americans Mourn Huge Loss of 9/11 Tribute Museum in New York VIDEO: It's a sad day for Americans as what some would argue as being the most important museum in the country has closed their doors forever. Wednesday, August 17, was the final day of operation for the 9/11 Tribute Museum in New York City. According to NBC New York, the decision was brought on after a sharp drop in visitors since the COVID-19 pandemic. The loss of revenue caused quite a large amount of financial hardship, which forced the executives with the museum to make the gut wrenching decision to shut their doors for good. "We're millions of dollars in debt with our lease, and to try and make that up on top of our annual operating cost is almost impossible without visitors or some intervention from our government," said Jennifer Adams-Webb, CEO and co-founder of the museum. WBUF-FM 92.9 BUFFALO North Carolina firefighters running 41 miles in 24 hours to benefit non-profit On Saturday, New Hanover County firefighters will test both physical and mental boundaries. "Our job is very physical but it's a lot of mental too," says Jason Sinclair with NHCFR. "Especially in a hurricane deployment or if we have to work all 24 hours, it's not just physical ability, it's a lot of mental." It is meant to symbolize the shift of a firefighter. They will stop at all 8 fire stations, which spans 41 miles, in 24 hours. In anticipation, Sinclair says they've been putting in a lot of extra work to prepare. "We are out running and it's August in Wilmington, North Carolina. So hot, humid, whatever condition it is, raining, the fire department always goes out so we are going to be running no matter what." They are raising funds for ACCESS of Wilmington, and the Miracle Field is right next to the station. WWAY-TV ABC/CBS/CW+ 3 WILMINGTON PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
